It is with great sorrow that the family of David Neil Parkinson, of Foothills County (west of Calgary), announces his passing on May 12, 2023, at the age of 55 years. To many, he was fondly known as Dave
David was born in New Westminster, BC on August 10th, 1967. From there, he moved with his family to Calgary, Cochrane, Winnipeg, and back to Calgary again.
Dave typically leaned towards adventure versus standing still. This free-spirited attitude took him to various locations in Western Canada for work or play. Dave spent time in Choiceland, SK, working on a farm early in adulthood. From there, he ventured West, to places such as Penticton, Victoria, and Vancouver. Dave particularly enjoyed his time living on Pender Island, BC, where he tried his hand at kayaking and self-employment. In 2012, Dave relocated back to Calgary to be closer to his family
Dave didn’t like to spend too much time at one job, often commenting, “the job was just too boring, time to move on”. All of that changed in 2016, when Dave began working as the Manager of Facilities and Grounds at the Leighton Art Center, West of Calgary. At that moment, Dave found his passion. He was so proud of the work he did at the center, always looking at ways to improve the Leighton experience for all, but also deeply conscious of the need to preserve the past. Dave’s family loved each trip made to his home, from the new art showings, hikes to admire the views and gardens, to just sitting around the fire talking about sports and music well into the evening. It was always memorable.
Dave was grateful for the beautiful place where he lived and worked, frequently taking, and sharing his photographs, especially at sunset. It is a great comfort to the family to know that Dave passed away at Leighton, a place that he truly loved and cherished
David will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his parents, Merv and Barb (Whaley) Parkinson, brothers Chris (Suzanne) and Tim (Enali). Dave was a loving fun uncle (fondly known as Uncle “Lou Lou”) to Ryan and Elsa.
A Celebration of Life will be announced in the near future.
