Obituary
Athens Delores McLennan (née Brown)
Athens Delores McLennan, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at the age of 78. Surrounded by her loving family at McNally House Hospice in Grimsby, Athens left behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Athens was a devoted mother to her children Nadia (Latchman) and Lawrence (Christal) and a doting grandmother to Anjali and Rosalie. Athens will be missed by her siblings Audrey, Ives, Hyacinth, Doreen, Elliott and Fay. Athens’s vibrant spirit touched the hearts of her nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends in Canada, Jamaica, and the United States. She was predeceased by her parents, Iris and Leonard Brown, and her brothers Donald (Danny), Osrine (Bummy), and Lancelot (Lance).
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Athens embarked on an extraordinary journey of self-discovery. In her early life, with the support and encouragement of her family, she relocated to Ottawa, Canada. Athens’s talent and passion for style led her to careers in fashion modelling, aesthetics and hairdressing. Athens and her family finally settled in Toronto having lived and built connections in various parts of Ontario and Jamaica.
Athens was known for her green thumb and holiday feasts. She loved good gossip and staying abreast of current events; faithfully watching 60 mins each week and always having a stack of People magazines at the ready. She could carry on a conversation about anything! She loved bold bright colours and prints; if it was fabulous, she had to have it. She loved a good find and would proudly show off her Winner’s hauls.
Athens, affectionately known as “Aunty Ten Ten,” will forever be remembered for her glamour, outgoing nature, infectious humor, and joyful spirit. She had a remarkable ability to bring laughter and good times to any gathering. She held deep connections with her family and her faith, always cherishing and nurturing those bonds.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Yokom and the staff at the Carlo Fidani Cancer Center in Mississauga, the compassionate palliative team at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton, and the warm welcoming staff and volunteers at McNally House Hospice in Grimsby. Their care and support during Athens’s journey are deeply appreciated.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023. Visitation will commence at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Funeral Service at 12:00 p.m. A reception will be held afterward to honour Athens’s life and legacy.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Athens’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the McNally House Hospice in Grimsby.
For those unable to attend in person, a virtual funeral service will be available. Please click the link below to Watch live or at a later time.
Athens’s light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her love, laughter, and vivacity will be deeply missed, but her memory will be cherished forever. May her soul find eternal peace.
