It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of
our beloved father/grandfather. Lionel Osborne
Haughn died peacefully in his home on Monday May
15th. He was the only child of loving parents
Maxwell and Margaret (Hersey) Haughn. He was
predeceased by his mother and father. He is
survived by his children: Melanie Higgins, Michael Haughn (Luis),
Kelly Haughn (John), Jason Haughn (Allison Penwell), Laura DeLong
(Jeffery), his grandchildren Laura Higgins, Kieran (Saara Kirves)
Higgins, Holden Martindale, Kai Martindale, Madelyn DeLong, Max DeLong
and great grand-daughter Elvi Higgins. He is also
survived by his cousin Maxine Nimmo of BC.
Lionel was raised and eventually retired in
Pentz, Nova Scotia. He had a very successful career as a
meteorologist for over 37 years with Environment Canada.
Lionel worked in various locations throughout the country –
Moncton, Goose Bay, Frobisher Bay, Toronto, Saint John and Halifax. He
later went on to become an independent weather consultant in beautiful
sunny Bermuda.
Lionel was a loving
and dedicated father to his five children to whom he remained close
until his passing. He absolutely loved spending time and spoiling his
adoring grandchildren. Lionel was a talented hockey player who made
first draft for the NHL when he was only 17 – this led to a
lifelong love and passion for all things hockey. Lionel
served on the South Shore Mustangs Board for an incredible 18 years
with 10 of those as President. He was a vibrant part of
every community in which he lived. An avid sport fan, Lionel
was actively involved in curling, baseball, figure skating, and golf.
You could always find him at the rink with a huge smile on face.
Lionel graduated from Bridgewater High
School in 1957 and remained in close contact with his group of friends
for over 70 years. He looked forward to his annual reunion with them
at White Point Beach. He was a proud graduate of UNB and
continued to cheer for the UNB Reds. He was an incredibly
social and charismatic man, who was loved and cherished by all who
knew him.
Cremation has taken
place.
Memorial service will be held August
11th 2023 at 11am at
the St. Peter’s Anglican
Church in West LaHave. A celebration of life and
reception with refreshments will follow at the Lunenburg
County Lifestyle Centre (LCLC) located
at 135 North Park Street
in Bridgewater. In
lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society
or to a scholarship being created in Lionel’s
memory. The LIONEL HAUGHN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP will be
