Obituary
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of James Murphy, 89, on May 6, 2023. He passed peacefully at his home in Lethbridge, Alberta surrounded by his family. He was born June 5, 1933, in Harvel, Illinois, the youngest son of the late John and Marie (Langen) Murphy. Brothers John, Harold, Gerald, Carl, and Roy preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years Barbara (Gough), son Nevin (Lisa) of Gig Harbor, Washington, daughter Deirdre of San Diego, California, grandson Isaac Budge, granddaughter Nia Murphy, sister Dorothy (Maguire) of Litchfield, Connecticut, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Raymond High School, he earned degrees from Western Illinois University, and the University of Montana. During his career in the theatre, he staged over 70 plays in the United States, Canada, and Ireland. He co-founded Huron Country Playhouse in Grand Bend, Ontario, was instrumental in transforming the 1000-seat Columbia Theater in Longview, Washington, into an active performing arts center, and wrote several books about his work in the theatre.
At his request, there will be no funeral service. A Memorial for family and friends may take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given in his memory to the charity of your choice. Online condolences to the family may be left at www.zentnerfuneralhomes.com.
