Brian’s Obituary
Brian Hugh Mattatall – 75 of Tatamagouche, passed away May 7, 2023 surrounded by family members. Born in Tatamagouche, in 1947, to Lester and Catherine (Purdy) Mattatall, Brian was one of ten children. Sharing the unique Mattatall sense of humor and an unwavering confidence, he used his quick wit and sly grin to make friends with everyone he met.
In his younger years, he traveled extensively, exploring the Eastern Seaboard, Florida, California, Montreal, Niagara, and Toronto. While back home, he was always on the go, at various times he managed a local band, a broomball team, and a men’s hockey team.
As someone who loved a good time with friends and family, Brian was not one to turn down an invitation, especially if it involved food, fun and laughter. Over the years he organized dances at the NSRC, hosted New Year’s Eve parties and for close to 25 years hosted an annual Mattatall family reunion, otherwise known as Uncle Brian’s lobster party.
He fished with his father, before setting off for adventure in Alberta where he worked for several years before returning to Nova Scotia to work with the Department of Forestry in Bible Hill and later the Brule Shore Golf Course. However, he was best known for his long-term position with the Town of Truro where he looked after the parks, ball fields, and as a 2nd Class Stationary Engineer maintained the Truro Legion Stadium where he, of course, drove the Zamboni.
Following his retirement, Brian enjoyed golfing at Brule Shore and was an active member of the local “coffee club”. In his spare time, he was often seen perched on his stool at CG Fulton Pharmacy. He was a supporter of the Legion and always quick to help with local causes. Brian had a huge heart and left a positive mark on those who knew him as evidenced by his ability to consistently like every Facebook post.
He is survived by brothers Mason, Gerald (Pat), Carl (Janet) and Malcolm (Chris); and sisters Hazel Ponte and Lynn (Tom) MacNeil; sister in-law Sharon; and a crew of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother John; two sisters and their husbands, Kathleen (Maynard) McGill and Elizabeth (Robert) Blair; sister in-law, Carol and great nephew Jeremy Wall.
At Brian’s request, cremation has taken place with a Service of Remembrance to be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 2023 at Sharon United Church, Tatamagouche with interment to follow at Lockerby Memorial Cemetery. Reception in Tatamagouche Legion Br. 64.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lockerby Memorial Cemetery or the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche.
