It is with utmost sadness the family wishes to announce the passing of Carl Donald King, 78, formerly of Nova Scotia, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 4th, 2023, at the Misericordia Health Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Born in Truro, Nova Scotia, he was the youngest child of the late Elmer and Ruth (Dryden) King.
He will be deeply missed by his common law partner Anne Lacosse, Winnipeg; his children: Michael King (Dawn-Leigh}, Hilden NS; Laura Bartlett, Truro NS; Chantel; grandchildren: Jake & Olivia King, Hilden NS; Lacey Fowler-Stiles, Alberta; several great-grandchildren; cousins: Pat Dryden, Barrie Ontario; Betty Baxter, Amherst, NS; and several nieces and nephews.
Carl was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was predeceased by his parents, Ruth & Elmer; a grandson, Matthew; siblings: Bill King; Jim King; Margaret (King) Collins; (brother-in-law, Phillip Collins}; Hazel (King) McSwain; brother-in-law, Neil and niece, Margie Rose McSwain.
After many years living in Nova Scotia, Carl headed west, where he made Winnipeg his home for the last 40 years.
A few years ago, he made his way back home for a joyous family reunion. He was on cloud nine to be home and reunite with his children, Mike and Laura, nieces Shelly and Christina King, and other family members; he was especially thrilled to meet his grandchildren and great-nephew and nieces. We are grateful for the memories we have made and the time that we had together.
Carl was a kind-natured soul; for many years, he had volunteered with the local Animal shelter to rescue abused and abandoned animals. In retirement, Carl enjoyed spending time with friends, holding yard sales, and watching wrestling.
Although he was miles away from his family, he didn’t let the distance keep him from those closest to him. Carl will be greatly missed by his family and will be fondly remembered for his big heart, quick wit and sass.
The family wishes to express gratitude to Anne, his partner and best friend for her unconditional love and taking such good care of our father, grandfather and uncle.
Special thanks to the staff on 5B at St. Boniface hospital, helping to bridge the distance by connecting Carl to his family by phone calls, passing on messages, and reading letters.
In keeping with Carls’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
A private interment will follow later at the Onslow Island Cemetery, Nova Scotia.
If so desired, a donation in Carls’s memory can be made to a local SPCA of choice.
“Rest in peace, Uncle, Dad, Granddad, and Friend.”
