Obituary
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of John David Craig (June 19, 1952 – April 19, 2023). John left this world peacefully just before midnight on April 19th at Georgetown Hospital. His memory will be cherished by sisters Karen and Margaret; brother Clark; sister- and brother-in-law Vicky and Philippe; nephews and nieces Michael (Jennifer), Leah (Shaun), Jeffrey (Jocelyn), Lara (Marcos) and Claire (Sam); grand nieces and nephews Adelaide, Hannah, Patrick, Aidan and Gabriella; as well as many friends from far and near. He has now reunited with his beloved mother Ethel and father Jack, and brother-in-law Mike.
A gentle soul and adventurous spirit, John paved his own path from an early age. In 1979, he sailed across the Atlantic – not even the storm of the century, the treacherous Fastnet, Force 10, could faze him. His travels took him across Europe, the Caribbean, and Central and South America by road and sea. Along the way, he formed deep friendships and gathered the materials for many wild stories. Some he’d gladly tell over a pint or two, others he’d keep behind a mischievous smile.
John was a passionate musician, happiest on banjo and guitar. He and his band, the Master Beats, left an indelible mark on Hamilton’s music scene, establishing the Gown and Gavel as a popular venue for live shows in the 1980s.
A gifted woodworker, John created beautiful furniture and objects of all kinds. His creations now fill many homes, just as memories of his kindness and humour fill our hearts.
John’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Georgetown Hospital for their care and compassion.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation would be warmly appreciated.
