Madeline Hamel of Black Diamond, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday April 11, 2023 at Age Care Midnapore in Calgary.
Madeline will be lovingly remembered by her five children, Linda (Stephen) Hoover of Delia, Brother Antoine (Little Brothers of the Sacred Heart) of France, Karen Hamel of Black Diamond, Joseph Hamel of Hawaii, and Pauline (Wayne) Warren of Calgary. Six grandchildren, Tanya (Scott) Mack of Nanaimo, B.C., Armand (Jessica) Hoover of Parkland County , Lindsey Hoover of Lethbridge, Lisa Duncan of Denver, CO., Elaine Huba of Calgary and Nathanael Hamel of Ontario and 11 great grandchildren, Julianne, Spencer, Trevor, Evelyn, Addison, Kaiya, Lincoln, Charli, Trey, Walker and Camella.
Madeline was predeceased by her infant son, Jean Mathew, husband Armand and grandson James Warren, parents Mary and Charley Smith, brother Tom Smith and sisters Theresa Downey and Ethel Briggs.
Madeline was born in Edmonton and came to live with her adoptive family, first in Vulcan area then south of Black Diamond. She attended school in Black Diamond then N.T.V.H.S. that is now the Turner Valley Golf Course club house.
As a young bride, she joined her husband on his farm east of Black Diamond to raise their family. Being widowed at a young age, Madeline drew from her staunch Catholic faith the incredible strength in raising five young children on her own. She enjoyed living on the farm with the view of the mountains from her kitchen window.
Mom took great pleasure in visiting family in Delia, Lethbridge, Nanaimo, Denver, Hawaii and Parkland County and looking after her grandchildren. She loved to watch her grandchildren and great grandchildren at play. They always brought her joy and made her smile. She also delighted in inviting the grandchildren to visit for sleepovers at her house. With the advent of ZOOM meetings, Mom was able to visit many times with her son, Brother Antoine in France.
In later years, Mom acquired an interest in photography. She entered a selection of photos at the Delia Fall Fair every October and was rewarded with ribbons for 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.
Madeline’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the caring staff of Age Care Midnapore Bridlewood Unit and Chapperal Unit for their care and kindness to our mother.
The family invites you to join them in a Prayer Vigil that will be held at 7:00pm Tuesday April 18, 2023 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church.
