Obituary
On Monday June 13, 2022, Yvonne Scott passed away in Dauphin.
Yvonne Cecile Marie (Latour) Scott was raised in Denholm Saskatchewan, later moving to Prince Albert to finish high school and then eventually moving to Dauphin with her Mom. Yvonne worked as a proof-reader at the Dauphin Herald (and never lost that proof-reading skill!). She met Sandy Scott when he walked into the Herald to place an ad. Mom spoke fondly of those early years in Dauphin – watching the Dauphin Kings, dances at Jerry’s Night Spot, going to the movies and shopping for the latest outfits.
Sandy and Yvonne married in 1956 in Dauphin, where Ken, Alan and Paul were born. They later moved to Ste Rose du Lac in 1964, where Michelle was born. In Ste. Rose they operated Scott’s Hardware for almost 30 years. The name “Hardware” did not do justice to the store which sold everything from giftware to hockey skates and hunting rifles to Maytag appliances. Mom was particular about how all this was displayed and spent time cleaning and rearranging items. This habit never left her – you never knew how her living room furniture or the pictures on the wall were going to be re-arranged from one visit to the next!
During these years Mom and Dad raised a family, ran a business, and went on family road trips across North America with a trailer in tow. And always, they spent as much time as they could with family and friends.
Mom and Dad retired to Dauphin in 1992, where they continued to travel and had memorable trips to Minnesota, Bermuda, Holland and Scotland. They also had an enviable social calendar – with lots of dinner parties with friends and never missing a Robbie Burns night or an event at the Legion.
Following Dad’s death in 1997, which was a difficult time for Mom and our family, Mom continued to maintain a home that was comfortable and welcoming to any and all who dropped in. There was always a pot of coffee or a cold bottle of wine waiting for guests. Her house was often a “pit stop” for people travelling through the Parkland.
She was a wonderful Mom, Grandma and Aunt to our family and to others. In particular Mom cherished the special bond she had with her two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Alex. She loved their visits and phone calls. Those two could do no wrong as far as Grandma was concerned!
Mom is survived by her children, Ken, Alan (Corrine), Paul (Trish), Michelle (Stan) and her grandchildren Kaitlyn and Alex.
A very big thank-you to Mom’s village of friends and neighbours who provided so much love and support to her over the years. This includes Karen, Norma, Val and so many others who gave Mom friendship and assistance and helped her to stay in the house that she loved. Our family can never thank you enough. Thanks also goes to Dr. Bretecher, Dr. Gray, Dr. Waters and Home Care staff who provided care over the years and to the staff of the 2nd floor of the Dauphin Hospital for their compassion in her final few days. Mom was also fortunate to have the companionship of her lifelong friend Lydia during her last hospital stay.
In Mom’s memory, donations can be made to a charity of your choice or the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Fund which helps Canada’s veterans and their families.
A funeral service will be held at Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin on June 25th, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.
