Winston Smith
February 21, 1927 – March 3, 2022
With much sadness, we announce the passing of Winston MacKenzie Smith in his 96th year. Beloved husband of Eileen (nee Hoyt), cherished father of Patricia, Stephanie (Rob) and Robert (Fern). Dear Grampie of Emily, Naomi, Crystal, Melissa, Erin, Emily and Tim and 8 great grandchildren.
Born in Petitcodiac and raised on Gowland Mountain, New Brunswick to George William Smith and Lulu Eliza (MacKenzie). He was the seventh son and second youngest child of eleven. Brother of Carol (John) and predeceased by Edna, Mary, Dorothy, George, Ken, Walter, Robert, Edwin and Harold. Raised in rural New Brunswick he learned a strong faith and work ethic and always stayed close to his Maritime roots.
He graduated from the University of New Brunswick, as a civil engineer in 1948 and began his 40 year career with the International Boundary Commission surveying the Canada/United States border. In 1950 he married his sweetheart, Eileen Hoyt and they had a strong and loving partnership for 71 years.
Winston loved an active lifestyle, gardening, travelling and keeping fit. Well into his eighties he enjoyed curling, softball, bowling, jogging and walking. In 1998 he was awarded the Governor General’s Caring Canadian award recognizing his years of community volunteer service with Scouts, Parkway House, helping seniors with income tax, volunteer driving for cancer patients and active member of Bromley Road Baptist Church.
Family and friends may pay respects at Tubman Funeral Home, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean on Monday, March 7, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m..
A celebration of life will be held at Bromley Road Baptist Church on Tuesday March 8 @ 2:00 p.m.. Interment at Capital Memorial Gardens to follow. Service will be livestreamed on youtube Bromley Road Baptist Church channel.
Attendees at the visitation and/or celebration of life will be required to wear a mask and asked to respect and practice social distancing.
