Obituary of William James Blackwell
It is with heartfelt sorrow, the family of William “Bill” James Blackwell, loving husband to Vera (Sleep) Blackwell, announce his passing on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at the Saint John Regional Hospital.
Born on July 13, 1935, in Saint John, he was the son of the late William and Blanche (Laird) Blackwell. After graduating from Saint John Vocational School, he began working at the Saint John Dry Dock. He then went to work with NB Tel for 37 years until his retirement. Bill enjoyed woodworking, playing hockey and bowling. After retiring, Bill and Vera would travel, taking bus tours all over North America.
Besides his wife, Bill is survived by his niece Doreen Walkington of ON, great niece, and nephews; Brittany, Tristan, and Michael Walkington, as well as many extended family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Bill was predeceased by his sisters; Doreen Blackwell and Gertrude Cossaboom.
The family wishes to thank the nurses on 3CS at the Saint John Regional Hospital for their care and compassion.
In keeping with Bill’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (849-2119). For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
