Obituary
William Mark Herron
1954 – 2022
Mark was born on June 21, 1954, in Saltcoats Saskatchewan to Annie and Jim Herron, and passed away peacefully at home on November 3, 2022, after a lengthy illness.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, and son Jim, his brothers: Max, Eddie, Dave (Gloria), and Glenn (Marg); sister Sheila and numerous nephews and nieces. Also mourning his loss are his in-laws: Penny (Leighton) Rushfeldt, Peggy (Doug) Hartman, Norma Reimer (Dave) and Warren (Patricia) Hilz.
He was predeceased by his parents, and brothers: Lorne and Don; sisters-in-law: Karen, and Terry; brothers-in-law: Ted and Jerry.
Mark started working in the oil patch at the age of 18, when he joined his brothers on the pipeline in Ontario. He then spent his career working from BC through Manitoba, as a labourer, oiler and an operator. He still has many pipeline buddies that he met over the years. When he wasn’t working, Mark spent time travelling, such as a Greyhound bus ride around the USA, trip to Australia with friends, and to South Africa to visit his brother Lorne.
Mark always had a job in his youth, working on farms, at the hardware store in Bredenbury, and various other odd jobs, to pay for his skates and sticks, playing hockey all through his youth (he didn’t buy shinpads – that’s what Sears catalogues were for!). He loved to tell stories of his glory days playing junior hockey for the Yorkton Terriers, earning a reputation of being a tough-guy (aka, fighter), breaking his nose and bones several times, continuing to play despite casts on his arm.
Mark will always be known as a great joke and storyteller. Mark loved to tell stories about growing up in Bredenbury. After-work drinks in the bar, or open-mike comedy night on vacation, he was always a favourite entertainer. And really, always had a new joke to tell, so Betty didn’t get totally bored listening to the same ones over and over. He always lived life on the lighter side, always quick to put a smile, or a ‘oh brother’ sigh of amusement on the faces of others.
Mark met Betty when she was going to university, and he was working pipeline near Black Diamond. They remained friends for years and were married just before the 1988 Calgary Olympic games. Son James William was born in October 1989 and was the shining light in Mark’s life. He spent a lot of his time driving aimlessly around the backroads, dropping into different stores and visiting friends for no real reason at all. Mark really took love in his life through things such as coaching Jim’s hockey & baseball teams, watching sports with his family, and teaching Jim life skills such as how to shoot a gun, tips around playing various sports, and the finer points of the upkeep it takes to live on the acreage. Mark really prided himself on his son Jim.
Mark and Betty spent some of their best times together travelling in the USA and around the western provinces. When the two of them were on the road seeing the different sights and spectacles North America had to offer, that is when they were at their happiest together.
Mark was committed and loyal to his wife and son more than anything else in life. He truly would say to give his family a full and rich life would be his greatest achievement.
