Obituary
William (Bill) Cumming McIntyre
1936-2022
Born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on November 24, 1936, to Jock and Pearl McIntyre. Bill “Scotty” passed away peacefully on September 16th, 2022, in Medicine Hat. Bill is preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, brothers, Hamish, Donald, and John, his sister Margaret, and his parents. He is survived by his brother Archie (Merla), children, daughter Carolyn (Paul), son Rob (Debbie), and grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bill lived on the McIntyre sheep farm north of Tompkins until he married Marjorie in 1962 and they moved to town. Bill started his career at the Tompkins Post Office as Assistant Postmaster and made several moves through the years, including stints in Climax and Prelate, but ultimately returned to Tompkins where he ended his long career as a Postmaster. Bill lived most of his life in Tompkins, then in 2017 he and Marj moved to Medicine Hat to be closer to family. Throughout his moves in the surrounding communities, Bill was always well known wherever he was, and could be counted on to share a story or two. Many would say he was blessed with the “gift of gab”.
Bill was an avid golfer and thoroughly enjoyed playing at least a couple times a week at the Tompkins Rolling Hills Course. Many weekends were filled with tournaments around the surrounding communities where he won a fair share over the years. Along with golf, Bill was also a sports fan and especially enjoyed hockey, curling, softball and baseball. He was very active in the community as a coach for his kids when they were young, and many more years during his life in Tompkins. Bill was a fixture in the community and wore many hats around town, always involved or helping at the skating rink, golf course, curling club, cemetery as well as an active Lions Club member. If something needed doing, you would often hear people say, “just call Scotty, he’ll know about it or lend a helping hand.”
One of his greatest gifts was his ability to make friends wherever he went. It seemed like no matter who you were talking to, they were only one person removed from knowing Scotty. And if he didn’t it wouldn’t be long before you were his friend. Even on a family trip to Scotland, Bill was not only making new friends but also people who they knew in common.
An informal celebration gathering and toast will be held at the Tompkins Rolling Hills Golf Course in Tompkins, Saskatchewan on October 8th at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Tompkins Rolling Hills Golf Course, Box 135, Tompkins, SK S0N 2S0.
