June 18-1932 – December 26, 2022
It is with profound sadness that we announce Bill’s passing, at Extendicare Medex, in Ottawa, Monday, December 26th, at the age of 90. Predeceased by his wife Amy (2018), he leaves behind his children, Wendy Mayhew (Kevin), and Bill (Lisa). He was very proud to have witnessed his two grandsons, Darren and Liam Mayhew (Sarah) grow up and begin making their way in the world. Bill was predeceased by his parents, William and Harriette Newell, brother Robert, brother-in-law Robert Sinclair, and sister-in-law Elizabeth Loten. He is survived by his sister Joan Sinclair, brother-in-law John Loten and sister-in-law Nancy Loten, as well as nieces and nephews. A resident of Fitzroy Harbour for 52 years, the continuation of his teaching career is what brought Bill and his young family to the Valley in 1970. His love of animals and the desire to live on a farm brought him to his little piece of heaven on the Galetta Side Road. After retiring from The Carleton Board of Education in the late 1980’s, Bill focused on farming full-time, which he loved. The Christian faith was a guiding light throughout his life, and the former St. George’s parish was a central part of that. He would often take services in the summer as a lay preacher as well as run the church choir, with practices happening every week at the farm. Bill was never one to shy away from giving of his time, from measuring out where the ball diamonds and rink would go at what is now the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre, to being the president of the West Carleton Hockey Association for a term. Bill was involved in sports his whole life, starting with baseball, hockey, and basketball while growing up in Hamilton. This continued after moving to the Harbour. He was one of the original members of the men’s fastball league in Fitzroy, which got its start at the old ball diamond just inside the provincial park. He played ball into his late fifties and “coached” many up-and-coming newbies to the league, from his lawn chair down the first base line. Bill has now begun the next part of his journey with the Lord and he is at peace with loved ones. The family would like to thank everyone at Medex for the expert level of care and compassion they offered that often went above and beyond. Bill’s arrangements have been entrusted to the Boyce Funeral Home Ltd., 138 Daniel Street North, Arnprior. Visitation will be held Friday December 30, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at the Boyce Chapel Saturday December 31, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Following the service, a reception will be held at the Boyce Reception Centre. Spring interment at St. George’s Anglican Cemetery, Fitzroy Harbour. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the St. George’s Cemetery Fund or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
