William “Bill” Swallow, of Moosomin and formerly of Maryfield, beloved husband of the late June swallow and husband of Jean Gauthier, passed away ate the Southeast Integrated Care Centre, Long Term Care, Moosomin, on Friday, November 18th, 2022 at the age of 91 years.
Funeral service from St. Andrew’s United Church, Maryfield, on Wednesday, November 30th at 2:00 p.m. with Roy Bortolotto officiating. Interment in Maryfield Cemetery.
William Crawford Swallow, known as Bill to most, was born in Virden, Manitoba on August 15, 1931 and was the third of five boys born to Al and Bertha Swallow. Bill and his parents farmed in the Windthorst area until 1937 where they moved to Ryerson and then the Amethyst district. Bill received his education at Bond School at Ryerson and later at Amethyst School.
After working at various jobs, Bill decided that farming was his calling. He returned to Maryfield where he and June were married on June 6, 1953 in Maryfield. They lived on the family farm south of Maryfield raising their family, son Bryan, daughter Cindy and youngest son Ray. Bill and June were married for 51 years until June’s passing in December 2004.
In his early days Bill loved to play softball pitching first for Ryerson and later for Maryfield. Going to sports days was always a family affair. Lots of ball games, then picnic lunches of potato salad, canned ham or chicken. In the winter Bill loved to curl attending and winning many bonspiels, once curling against the famous Richardson team. Later on Bill coached both the men’s and ladies’ softball teams on which Bryan, Cindy and Barb played.
Bill and June loved to travel with their campers and their motorhomes. Camping at Kenosee and Moosomin lakes where Bill put many tanks of fuel through the boat pulling his kids and grandkids around the lake on skis, wakeboards or tubes. They made many trips out to BC to see his brother Jerald and his family, to the east coast, enough cruises to attain “Mariners” status with the cruise line and of course the winters in Texas. While in Texas, Bill loved to golf, hitting the links pretty much everyday.
When Bryan and Barb were married in July 1981, Bill and June moved to the Lowell Erickson farm. Bill and Bryan continued to farm until 2004 and had their farm sale in 2005.
Bill was an active member of the Maryfield Lions Club and the Maryfield Recreation Board. He held a leading role on the organizing committee, instrumental in building the current rink in Maryfield. Many trips were made around the country with John Naylen looking at other facilities to make sure that Maryfield’s was one of the best.
Bill met Jean Gauthier in Texas and they were married in April, 2009. Bill and Jean continued to winter there until Bill’s health began to decline. Bill moved back to Maryfield in March of 2021 where he lived at the Sunrise Villa until September of that year. He then moved into Long Term Care at the South East Integrated Care Center in Moosomin, Saskatchewan where he lived until his passing on November 18, 2022.
Bill was predeceased by his wife June, son Ray, parents Al & Bertha Swallow, brothers Gordon & Jerald, sisters-in-laws, Arnetta and Della.
Bill is survived by his son Bryan (Barb) Swallow, daughter Cindy (David) Cairns, daughter-in-law Annette Swallow, grandchildren Amanda (Adam), Nathan (Mel), Kelsey (Dustin) and Marlee, and great-grandchildren Cassidy, Isabelle, Tucker and Blakely, his wife Jean, brothers Don (Betty) and Dennis (Marj) Swallow, sisters-in-law Fay Donovan and Sharon Sauter as well as many nieces and nephews.
Donations in Bill’s memory can be made to the Sunrise Villa in Maryfield, Saskatchewan or to the Moosomin Long Term Care at the Moosomin & District Healthcare Foundation Box 1470 Moosomin, Saskatchewan S0G 3N0
