William Austin Bill Herron Friday October 7th 2022

William “Bill” Austin Herron of Murray Siding, NS
November 17, 1934 – October 7, 2022
It is with immense sadness that we share the news of Bill’s passing, in his 88th year, on October 7, 2022, surrounded by his family and so much love, in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, NS. Born in Noranda, Quebec and growing up in his younger years in Northern Ontario (Haileybury), Bill was the eldest child of the late Lloyd W. Herron and Norma J. Herron (Austin).
Bill is survived by his wife of 62 years, the love of his life, Marion; his three adoring daughters, Vickie (Joe) Birch, Kelly Herron-Jacobs (Graham Jacobs) and Cindy Milner (Scott Crawford), who gave him seven wonderful grandchildren whom he cherished as his legacy; Alex, Amanda, Michael, Jason, Mitchell, Amy and Jodie who in turn have given him twelve great grand children, all of whom he was so proud. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Bradley and her three sons.
We would be remiss not to mention his little buddy, Ace. He loved his little dog with the big attitude.
Bill moved to the Toronto area in 1950 and joined the Canadian Guards in 1959, transferring to the RCR and then on to the Lorne Scots PD & H Regiment (Reserve) where he served for 35 years obtaining the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major (four- and one-half years). He also served as Captain for three years before retiring. During the 50’s, Bill spent most of his time working in the Arctic in the mining exploration field (diamond drilling). He then obtained work at Gilbey’s Canada as a maintenance/welder where he completed his official working days.
In 2003, Bill and Marion decided to leave the big smoke and move to Truro – Marion’s hometown. A move he never regretted. He was thrilled that his daughters and their families made Truro their home as well, he was complete.
Bill was involved for many years in various volunteer organizations. He loved sports and played many in his youth at a high caliber level. He used his knowledge to coach and referee both Lacrosse and Hockey while his daughters played the games he loved. A highlight for Bill was playing in an organized mixed softball league with his three daughters and their spouses. One organization held close to his heart was the Royal Canadian Legion. He was a member in both Georgetown, Ontario and Truro, NS, Branch #26, where he served a term as Branch President and was the Branch Service Officer from 2002 until very recently, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. In 2013, Bill was awarded the Legion Lifetime Membership.
Donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the VON Colchester division or the CEHHC Palliative Care Unit.
A legion service and celebration of life will be held on Saturday October 15th in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #26, 42 Brunswick St., Truro from 1-3pm.
