Obituary
Wilbert Ewald Bauer of Calgary, AB passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2022, at the age of 84. Will was born in Empress, AB on January 16, 1938. His father worked for the CPR and their family was transferred to Nacmine, AB.
His childhood was spent in this little village which was four miles from Drumheller. Will often fondly reminisced about his summer jobs on Gardine’s farm, milking cows and bringing 40 horses in from the pasture early each morning.
He started playing the trumpet at an early age and enjoyed accompanying his brother Al playing accordion and his sister Min and mother singing at family get-togethers. He proudly recalled playing the lead role in his High School musical, Tom Sawyer.
In 1956 Will moved to Calgary and landed a job at the Alberta Wheat Pool, which he turned into a career spanning over 40 years.
While at the Wheat Pool Will met the love of his life, Marion, and they married on September 5, 1959.
Will and Marion both came from very large families and had three children of their own and made their home in Lakeview.
In 1975 Will and some Lakeview neighbours founded the Century Calgary Clown troop. His aptly named alter ego “Sergeant Trueheart” entertained hundreds of sick children in hospitals across Canada and the USA.
He always made time for all the children in his life, whether that be his own children, grandchildren, nieces, or nephews, many of which accompanied him down to Weaselhead park for a swim in the river.
Wills passion, second only to his family, was singing in choirs. He sang with the St James Church choir, the Dutch Canadian Choir, and the German Canadian Choir, culminating in several trips to Europe.
In his early 40s, Will became a dedicated long-distance runner, competing with the Wheat Pool team in the annual Banff to Calgary relay marathon. He enjoyed many other past times such as cross-country skiing, camping, or simply “putzing” in the garden. He loved travelling including cruises with Marion and their siblings to far-off exotic locations such as the Panama Canal, Hawaii, and the Fiji Islands.
Will strongly believed that family came first, and his lasting legacy is the lives that he has touched and the fond memories we share.
Besides his loving wife, Marion; Will is survived by his son David (Norma) of Calgary, AB, his son Dennis (Katy) of Calgary, AB, his daughter Sandra of Calgary, AB; and his grandchildren, Thomas (Jesaca), Lindsay, Sarah, Nathan and Madison of Calgary, AB. He is also survived by his brothers, Rein (Lorraine) of Calgary, AB, Harvey (Lou) of Saskatchewan; and sister-in-law Pat of Edmonton, AB.
Will was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and John Bauer; his brothers John, Art, and Alvin Bauer; his sister Min; brother-in-law John Omelchenko; and sister-in-laws May and Betty Bauer.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. James Catholic Church (5504 20th Street SW, Calgary) on Wednesday, September 27, 2022, at 11:00 am.

Death notice for the town of: Calgary, Province: Alberta
I will always remember Wil’s gentleness and patience the day 3 year old Sandy decided to pack her wee bag and run away 2 houses down to our house. What a great dad!
I know this very kind man will be sorely missed by those dear to him
