Obituary
Wayne passed away peacefully on February 11, 2022, after a brief illness. He leaves his beloved wife of 51 years, Pat; daughter Andrea (Justyn); granddaughters Lauren (Eddie), Molly, Dcera (Kyle) and Julya and great grandchildren Wilder and Maddyn. He is lovingly remembered by his siblings Susan (Richard), Brenda (Lucy), James (Gloria) and Linda (Shelly); brother-in-law David (Anita); along with many nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Irvin and Doreen Wall; sister Andrea and niece Jaye.
Wayne was born September 7, 1946. He crammed a lot of living in his 75 years. His working career was diverse. He started young apprenticing as a plumber working for his Dad. He married the love of his life in 1970 and adventure took them from living and working in the NWT’s to Vancouver. Eventually they settled back in their hometown of Portage where Wayne managed the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Wayne was insatiably curious and a lifelong learner always having a goal to move towards. His next goal was to obtain his glider plane license as he was already certified private pilot.
He cared deeply for his community and strongly believed in volunteerism. For many years he volunteered as a Firefighter/First Responder, a driver for Central Plains Cancer Care, and was involved with many boards and organizations always keeping the needs of the people at the forefront of his work. His determined efforts were recognized and led to his second career as an elected City Councilor. He believed his role as an elected official was to ensure people were informed about the decisions being made on their behalf. Wayne without fail treated people with respect; always listening to the opinions of others but heeded his own moral compass. He did not hesitate to take a position based on his values; sincerity and compassion were evident in each decision.
Wayne was the oldest in his family and always went the extra mile. Whether it was helping with a reno, fixing a plumbing issue or offering a shoulder of support, he was there without fail. Family meant the world to Wayne, and he proudly flashed his phone with photos any chance he got. He loved being Papa and gave his heart to his granddaughters and great grandchildren. He was so touched by great grandson Wilder’s gift of ‘Puppy’ to comfort him in his final days.
Both Wayne and Pat have been surrounded by loving friends. They have enjoyed many games of golf, dinners, wonderful conversation and friendships.
Wayne’s farewell will be limited to family, and they have gratefully declined flowers. If so desired, memorial donations may be made to Central Plains Cancer Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8.
A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
