Longtime resident of Burlington and member of Burlington Baptist Church. His childhood on a family farm in Norfolk County inspired his life-long love of the outdoors.
Dearly cherished father of Sharon Mulkewich of Burlington, Jane Mulkewich (Patri Maharaj) of Dundas, Miriam Mulkewich (Jim Kennedy) of Hamilton. Loving and adored grandfather of Caitlin Hilferty, Nick Worthington, Matt Worthington, Jordanne Mulkewich, Ali Mulkewich and Noah Mulkewich. Survived by extended family & many friends.
Predeceased by the love of his life, wife Beverley (nee Bunston).
Walter retired as a much-loved mayor of Burlington in 1997 after 2 terms. Prior, Walter was an elected member of Burlington and Halton regional councils for 15 years while he also enjoyed a sales career with educational publisher Ginn and Company and was Executive Director of the Housing Help Centre in Hamilton. A graduate of McMaster University, Walter was a high school teacher in Hamilton, Oakville, and Inuvik, Northwest Territories in the 60’s & 70’s. Walter was a New Democratic Party candidate in provincial and federal elections in the 1970’s and ‘80’s. Dedicated to community service, Walter volunteered with many different organizations over his lifetime, including the Hamilton Port Authority and the Burlington Performing Art Centre in his retirement years.
Visitation will be at Smith’s Funeral Home, 485 Brant Street, (one block north of City Hall), Burlington (905-632-3333), on Sunday, March 6 from 2 – 5 p.m. & 7 – 9 p.m. The funeral will be Monday, March 7 by invitation only. All are invited to view the livestream. Livestream link will be available under the Photos & Videos tab. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Donations to the Beverley and Walter Mulkewich Community Development Fund at the Burlington Community Foundation, Burlington Baptist Church, or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
