Obituary
Walter Theodore Plitt went to be with his Lord on July 14, 2022, at the age of 90. He will be remembered and missed by his family, wife Marjorie, children Stephen (Monica), Gwen (Jefrey), Randall (Cindy), and grandchildren Anita and Zoelle.
Walter Theodore Plitt was born in Fawcett, Alberta, May 22, 1932, to Gus and Emma Plitt. He was baptized by Pastor Kirsch on June 17 of the same year. Walter confirmed his Christian faith with Pastor Gloeckler in April 1946 in the same Lutheran congregation.
Walt grew up on the homestead in Fawcett with his brothers and sisters (Arthur, Mabel, Doreen, and Gordon). They all worked hard on the farm and, when Walt was a young teen, he earned money at the sawmill across the road. After Fawcett, the family lived in Blue Ridge, Mayerthorpe, and eventually New Westminster, BC, where Walt was hired at the Westminster Shook Mill (which later merged with MacMillan Bloedel). He worked with “MacBlo” for 22 years, grading lumber, as a foreman in many areas, then finally as part of the sales force. He was proud of getting a company car and an expense account!
During these years he met the love of his life, Marjorie Guebert at a Walther League gathering at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in New Westminster, BC. The A&W was a popular date spot for the young couple (and as retired people, too!).
Walt and Marj were married at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in New Westminster, BC on July 23, 1961, by Marj’s brother Rev. Cliff Guebert. Not long after, they were blessed with three children: Stephen, Gwendolyn (who he liked to jokingly call George), and Randall. They first lived in Coquitlam with their children, who loved the VW bug! In 1971 the family packed up and moved to Summerland, BC, where Walt and his brother Gordon had purchased Martens Lumber.
Along with work life, there were camping trips, fishing, bowling, trips to visit family, golf, softball, card games, and BBQ’s.
In 1982, after the lumberyard closed, Walt and Marj (and family) took a contract to run Peach Orchard Campground, which they did for 11 years. Walt also continued to use the lumberyard as his “shop”, where he hung doors, and took on many woodworking projects including building picnic tables and planter pots.
Walt was thrilled with the arrival of his grandchildren, Anita and Zoelle. He loved them a lot and any visit with them was special. He also happily welcomed to the family Monica, Jefrey, and Cindy, partners for his children. In retirement he continued doing some woodworking, being very active at church (he was still helping with money counting during his last years), teaching bridge, playing shuffleboard, playing cards, and watching “Wheel of Fortune”, “Jeopardy”, and lots of sports! He loved doing Kakuro, Sudoku, and mental math right up until his last days.
Walt was a firm believer in Jesus all his life, and he served his Lord in many capacities including leadership, music, as treasurer, and organizing men’s breakfast. He was chairman of the building committee for the current church building, and Martens Lumber provided all the lumber for the project at cost.
Walt will be missed for his gentleness, loving and welcoming nature, sense of humour (which was evident right up until the last day), love of sports and a good game of cards. Walt was eagerly looking forward to seeing Jesus, so we rejoice with him that he is in his heavenly home.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Summerland, BC.
Memorial tributes may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, or Canadian Lutheran World Relief.
