WALTER MACDOUGALD
Walter Ormond MacDougald, 97, of Stratford and formerly of Fullarton died peacefully surrounded by family at Spruce Lodge, Stratford on Monday August 22, 2022.
Beloved husband of Marian (nee Sawyer) MacDougald. Dear father of Bill (Karen), Doug (Barbara), Janice (Phil) Miller, Patricia (Richard) and Ormond (Annie). He will be missed by his many grandchildren, great grandchildren and dear sister-in-law Fern Dougall and brother-in-law Tom Sawyer (Nancy). Also surviving are his nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents, Ormond and Margaret (nee Walker); brothers, John and Jim (Beulah); brother-in-law, Bill Dougall; and sister-in-law, Lois (late Harvey) Hodgins.
“Dad grew up on a farm in Fullarton Twp., was educated through grade eight, and was greatly influenced by the Great Depression. At 18 years of age, he enlisted in the RCAF and fought WWII in Southeast Asia as a tail gunner in a B-24 Liberator Bomber – the courage to do so is inspiring, and the world it opened for Dad changed his and our lives. Dad came home, bought a farm, married Mom, and had us – his five kids. He also became a successful and entrepreneurial farmer through the late 50’s and 60’s. Early health issues led to a pivot in his late 40’s to become clerk treasurer for Fullarton Twp., which he did for the next 17 years with meticulous detail, leadership, and vision. Many projects followed through his retirement: Langside Farm – his Huron County ‘farm cottage,’ restoration of countless antique clocks, study of family genealogy and history – and many more. Dad’s guiding principle was service, and he led by example for his country, his community, and his family. He also led by example by embracing lifelong learning – having only grade eight didn’t slow Dad down! Dad lived prudently, took calculated risks, gave back to his communities and family as able, loved to play games, and he consistently showed a competitive spirit – especially playing euchre. He modelled classic risk-reward probability theory for us all the time; getting euchred and making lone hands with aplomb – and winning a lot!” Well-taught life values; well-led life. We love you Dad, Bill, Doug, Jan, Tricia, Sandy.
