Walter Kenneth Lane 1935 2022

Walter Kenneth Lane of Riverview,
NB passed away at The Moncton Hospital on Saturday, July 02,
2022 at the age of 87. Born in Halifax, NS he was a son of the late
Walter D. and Dorothy (White) Lane.
July 2, 2022, we said
Goodbye to our dad, & Poppy, Walter K. Lane.
Dad served his country from
1953-1974 as a Military Policeman, Sargent-Retired, Canadian Provost
Corps. That started at CFB Gagetown and then took him around the
world, Germany, Beirut, Cyprus, with the UN
Peacekeepers. There were many other aspects of
Dad’s military career that went on, but those were not
shareable! He retired from the service in 1974 and
began a civilian career with the Ministry of Transport and moved our
family to Gander, NL, where he was the Supervisor of Security
& Policing for the International Airport, where he met Heads
of State, Fidel Castro, and numerous celebrities that traveled through
the International Airport Town. He loved to fly and had his private
pilot license. Dad also loved to Salmon Fish with his pal
Barry Gillingham, and spent many hours on the Gander River, eventually
getting his guide license to take the American Sports in. He was a
member of the Gander Curling Club, served as President, as well as
participated in Cross Country Skiing. In 1982 Dad
and Mom moved to Riverview, and Dad worked for the Ministry of
Transport, again in the Security and Policing for the Airports in
Canada, He eventually retired and continued his love of Salmon Fishing
and Guiding on the Miramichi River. After Mom passed in 1999, His love
of the water and sailing took him to Mahone Bay, NS, where he then
called home. He could be seen sitting on his front
porch watching the sailboats go by, feeding Sammy the seagull or out
of the water sailing with his friends Jim Rosbe and Don Barr 0r online
Golfing with his pals, Aubrey and Barry. His other past time was
playing Angry Birds
Dad, an avid Crib player taught us
all how to play, although it wasn’t very often that
we’d win against him!! just when you think you’d
skunked him, he’d come roaring back and beat the pants off
you!
Dad was Diagnosed with leukemia in
2019, which brought him back to Riverview for family support and
medical care. Although he was not treatable, he still fought it with
all his strength. During this time, he met some wonderful friends at
21 Crystal Drive, Ray, Joe, Elaine, Brenda, and Margaret, Dad became
known as the ‘Goose whisper’ and could be found
out back with the Geese and their goslings. He would sit for hours,
and the Geese would bring their fuzzy babies to greet
him. Twice Dad, who had trouble walking, went down
over the grass pushing his rollator a few hundred feet after a fox who
had cornered the Geese and their babies yep, they survived, not sure
how he got down there or back, but he was determined to save them, and
did! He rode a motorcycle on his Germany tour and had hoped
to ride a Harley at least once more.
His great joy in life was his
grand kids and great grand kids. whether it be a football tailgating
party at the University, or Cribbage games, or just family
BBQ’s so that everyone was around, he enjoyed it
all…A prankster and a jokster he could be as well, right
even up till the end. “Tea
anyone!”
For us, his adult children, while
he drove us nuts sometimes, he was also our friend, and confidant, a
shelter in a storm, for us always to turn to when we needed the
guidance or just a hug. He protected his family
fiercely. Stubborn to the end. A Warrior to the
end. RIP Dad/Pops/poppy, we love you
and will miss you dreadfully, we will be watching for the dragonfly
and know it is you.
