July 2022
We are saddened to share that Anne Jennifer Walsh, nee Byrtus, suffered a stroke and passed away at the age of 94 on Thursday, July 7, 2022. She spent her last days in comfort and surrounded by family in Oakville, Ontario.
Anne was born on November 28th, 1927 in Athabasca, Alberta, and grew up there on a farm with her two older and five younger siblings, as well as their parents, Mike and Elizabeth Byrtus (nee Sikora). She studied at the Edmonton General Hospital School of Nursing and became a nurse. Always an adventurous soul, her plan was to save enough to work in Hawaii. While working towards that in Whitehorse, she instead met and then married her husband, Denis Walsh, in 1955.
Anne was a tireless worker, and in Whitehorse she and Denis raised three children, held two full-time jobs, and developed one very successful campground along the Alaska Highway. Anne and her family relocated to Ajax, Ontario but still spent time exploring and camping. It was Anne’s idea to buy the family cottage in Haliburton, where she spent many idyllic summers teaching her growing family how to pick the perfect blueberries for her legendary pies.
Her work ethic extended to caring for her community. She regularly attended and supported her local Catholic Church, St. Bernadette, was a member of the Catholic Women’s League, and volunteered with Durham Outlook for the Needy. She made sure to stay in touch with friends, family, and former coworkers near and far, and was especially fond of catching up over a round of bridge. Anyone who has had the chance to play against her knew not to believe her complaints about her cards she was the kind of clever that always won (and well-read enough to complete crosswords in pen).
Anne is survived by her three children and their spouses, Aldis and Paul van Warmerdam, Karen and Derek Sims, and Barry and Carol Walsh, as well as her nine grandchildren, Kevin, Nicole, Christine, Brianna, Kailey, Cheryl, Patrick, Daniel, and Domenic. She was also thrilled to have two great-grandchildren, Madison and Wesley.
Visitation Details: Anne’s life will be celebrated at a visitation on Monday, July 11 at Accettone Funeral Home in Ajax, from 6-8 p.m. A funeral will be held at the church she loved, St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Ajax, on Tuesday July 12 at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow at the Accettone Funeral Home.
Donation Details: In lieu of flowers, if you wish a donation can be made to Durham Outlook for the Needy, Covenant House or a charity of your choice.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Walsh
