Violet (Vi) Dryden of Black Diamond, Alberta passed away the morning of September 26, 2022 at the age of 91. At the time of her death, she was under great care by the doctors and nurses at the Oil Field Hospital. The family cannot thank them enough for their kindness and caring.
Vi was born to Joseph and Doris Stevenson July 26, 1931, in Nether Broughton, England. She graduated from nursing school in Birmingham, 1953. She married Myles Murtagh December 1953 and immigrated to Canada May 1954. She gave birth to twins (girl and boy) November 1954 in Wainwright AB, a son, March 1956 in Ponoka AB, another son, May 1957 in Calgary, and a daughter, 1962 in Calgary. In 1973 her first marriage ended.
Vi became a registered nurse in Alberta in 1959. She had a passion for Postpartum and worked several years at the Holy Cross hospital and Grace Hospital in Calgary. Vi also taught nursing courses at Mount Royal College.
She married Austin Dryden, the love of her life, in 1978. Austin brought to the marriage three children and four foster children. They lived for a short while in Airdrie AB and in Calgary. Austin and Vi then moved to Creston BC. They had many great travel adventures including trips across Canada, the US, England, Israel, and Australia. Sadly, Austin passed away in June 1994. Shortly after that, Vi moved back to Alberta residing several years in Turner Valley, then in Okotoks, and for the last years of her life in Black Diamond. She loved this area and in particular its views of the Canadian Rockies.
Since 1978, Vi was very active with the Baptist church and later with the Gospel Church in Black Diamond under the direction of Pastor Matt, her favorite minister. Vi also took great joy in becoming a Clown entertaining folks for several years. She particularly enjoyed engaging her grandson into this activity. During the long winter days, Vi loved to knit and was an avid puzzle solver. She was disappointed, as her life came to an end, that she could not tackle three puzzles she received on her 91st birthday.
She is lovingly remembered by her children Veronica (Barry), Jim (Cheri), Pat, Michael (Joan); step children Michelle, Spencer, Maureen, and Tony; grandchildren Sean, Kassia (Jordan), Cheryl (Gregg), Heather, and Peter, and four great grandchildren. She is also lovingly remembered from across the pond in England by her brother Reg, his daughters Fiona (John) and Debbie and their children Zoe, James, Lawrence, Harriet, and William.
Vi was predeceased by her daughter Andrea in 1973.
A private family graveside service will be held at the Okotoks Cemetery on Monday, October 3, 2022. A celebration of life event, to be held in Black Diamond, will be scheduled for a later date.
