Obituary
Violet was born to Swedish immigrant parents in a log house near Bittern Lake and she was part of a loving family of eight children. Her childhood years were busy and happy on the farm, where she played an important role supporting her mom with the sewing and cooking. She was one of the three Carlson girls who played fastball for the Central Community Red Wings and who was present on a snowy evening that marked the first dance held at Central Community Hall.
She attended school at Roseland and Harvest Home Schools and in 1941 went on to Alberta College. When she graduated, she started work at the Alberta Treasury Branch in Wetaskiwin. Violet married Earl Brandt Oct. 31, 1943, and together they operated a successful farm near Gwynne. They retired in the late ‘60’s and moved into a house that was built for them in Wetaskiwin. Her husband Earl passed away in 1993 and for some time after Vi remained in their house. In 2011, she moved to Sunrise Village (now Seasons) where she lived the rest of her life.
Over the years, Violet made thousands of garments for hundreds of people, and there are examples of her sewing at the Wetaskiwin Museum. There are many a bride who made her vows in one of Vi’s beautifully crafted wedding gowns, supported by equally beautifully gowned bridesmaids, mothers, and flower girls.
Friends and family looked forward to her wonderful baking, particularly her scrumptious cinnamon buns. Her sewing and baking were legendary, and she was also a talented painter and needle-worker. Many of her works proudly hang today on the walls of family and friends.
Violet is remembered as a kind, thoughtful and loving person with a certain spark who loved to host visitors from all over Canada, the US and Sweden and to travel to visit them as well. She is particularly appreciated within the family for her role as a companion through her older sister’s final years.
She was a good driver, making her last drive well into her later years. Who else do you know that was stopped by the RCMP for a driver’s licence check on her 100th birthday?
Violet passed away peacefully on June 28, 2022, with family by her side. She is fondly remembered by her brother Vernon (Janice) Carlson of Edmonton, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and relatives in Sweden. She was predeceased by her husband Earl; parents Arthur and Anna Carlson, sisters Elsie (Everett) Denton, Marg (Alfred) Turnquist, Dae (Knut) Stranger, and brothers Evert (Helen), Lennart, and Helmer (Margie); and her special friend Bill Holt.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for early August. Details to follow.
