It is with great sorrow and utmost love we mourn the loss of Verna Pon.
Born in Toisan, China, she immigrated to Canada and, in 1954 in Edmonton, she married her husband Ken. They raised 5 children while she was an active partner in operating several restaurants and the Blue Bell grocery store.
From the 1970s until her retirement, Verna was totally supportive and participated alongside Ken in his many worthy fundraising causes and endeavours in the Chinese community in Edmonton.
Over the years, Verna developed an interest in watching sports on TV, especially basketball and NHL hockey games with Ken. In her golden years, she developed a passion for the favorite comfort foods of her children and grandchildren as she tagged along for burgers and fries, donairs, pizza, and homemade baked goods.
In 1987, Verna and Ken, accompanied by several family and relatives, made a memorable trip to Toisan, China, to visit the villages of their birthplace. In their travel adventures, Verna and Ken were able to share quality time with family in Hawaii, on a Mexican Riviera Cruise, and an Alaskan Cruise consisting of 16 family members!
Most of all, Verna enjoyed spending time with her family, where she demonstrated her love through making tasty family meals. She enjoyed the fun and laughter at family gatherings and potlucks and was extremely lucky at family bingo. She was very affectionate to everyone and was known for giving big hugs and kissing both cheeks.
Verna is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Jean (John), Mary, Shirley (Dan), Lucy (Tom) and daughter-in-law Susie. She is deeply loved by her 9 grandchildren: Nathan, Christopher, Melissa, Adam, Laura, Kayla, Jordan, Keanna, and Kiara; and great-granddaughter, Senya.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ken; son, William; parents, Joe and Lang Shee Mah; sisters, Sun Oi and Rui Yin; and brothers, Shing Fong and Bing.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Verna Suey Wan Pon 2022..
