January 3, 1942 – June 1, 2022
It is with great sadness that the family of Verdun Murray Smith, 80, of Whynotts Settlement (formerly Garden Lots) announces his unexpected passing at South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater on June 1, 2022.
Born in Moser River NS, he was the son of the late Nina and Bill Smith. Verdie was a dedicated welder for Lunenburg Foundry and Engineering for over 47 years.
He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who was always content as long as he knew his family was healthy and happy. Verdie enjoyed the outdoors. He kept busy with fishing, hunting, and gardening. In his later years, a trip to the grocery store, and delivering baked goods to his grandchildren seemed to be a favorite pastime for him. Although, with every delivery came the expected “I don’t know if it’s fit to eat”. His blueberry cake and spice cookies will forever be missed. He also loved cooking meals for his dog Lily before her passing earlier this year, ensuring she ate better then a queen, and was never hungry.
Seeing his grandchildren become parents was also one of his biggest highlights in life. The way he would beam when they were around could make a room light up all on its own.
Verdie was predeceased by the love of his life, Helen Smith, who he thought of every single day. He was also predeceased by son William (Billy) Smith.
He is survived by daughters Nancy Corkum (Alan Veinot), Whynotts Settlement; Cindy (Arto) Kotsalainen, Scarborough, ON; his four grandchildren, Justin (Shauna), Julie (Shawn), Jessica, and Jeremy (Gina); seven great grandchildren, Kolbi, Joshua, Elizabeth, William, Raya, Emersyn, and Madelyn, sisters Irma Smith-Schleihauf, Porters Lake; Ruthie Josey, Dartmouth, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy 3, Lunenburg, with visitation on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service to celebrate Verdie’s life will be held on Monday at 2:00 p.m, with Rev. Vivian Moores officiating. Interment will be in Garden Lots Cemetery, Garden Lots.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Garden Lots Cemetery, Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of your choice.
