GAGE, Vera – It’s with great sadness that the family of Vera Gage (nee Frankow) of Welland, announces her passing at Northland Pointe on June 11, 2022 at the age of 88. Vera died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family.
Vera was the beloved wife and dancing partner of Walter (Wally) Gage for 64 years. She was the loving mother of Garry (Loredana), Linda (David) and Sandra (Andrés), and cherished grandma of Kaitlyn, Jeremy, DJ, Bianca, Lucas and Sofia. Vera was predeceased by her parents Frances and Joseph Frankow.
Born in Leamington, Vera spent part of her early childhood in Poland. She was raised in Port Colborne, helping her parents run Frankow’s Grocery Store. Vera was smart as a whip, skipping two grades and graduating high school at age 16. Out of the classroom, she was a star on the track and loved playing basketball. Later in her life, you could always find Vera shooting hoops in the driveway with her kids and grandkids.
Vera began working at Wallace Transport at age 17 and worked for 10 years as their bookkeeper. It was during that time she met Wally, the love of her life. He was a handsome young man from Welland who had hitchhiked with his buddies to attend one of the weekend dances. Married at age 24, Vera stopped working when they moved to Welland and started their family a few years later.
She loved baking, bowling and music, and never stopped dancing with Wally. Vera was a social butterfly who loved getting dressed up and going out with their friends and family, late nights were the norm for Vera and Wally. She was also the biggest cheerleader for Wally, her kids and grandkids at hockey rinks, basketball courts, baseball fields and soccer pitches. Her family’s lifelong participation in sport took Vera and Wally across the province, country and overseas.
Vera will be greatly missed by her many family and friends. An only child, she gained eight siblings when she married Wally, and was welcomed with open arms. Vera loved spending time with her immediate and extended families at holiday and special celebrations. In the last five years of her life, she met her dear friend Shirley Dekker. No one could make Vera smile and laugh like Shirley. Her family will be eternally grateful to her for making Vera’s final years joyful ones. Some people fear dementia, Shirley embraced it.
We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone at Northland Pointe for all they did the past three years. Everyone in Lakeside Gardens treated Mom with amazing care and compassion. A special thanks to nurses Jenn and Liane for being so kind and comforting to Mom and our family throughout her final days. It felt right for Mom to go back home when she needed extra care. Visits to Northland were peaceful and reflective, the lake a calming influence for us all throughout Mom’s final few years.
The family will receive their friends at the H. L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Welland on Monday, June 13, 2022 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with prayers at 3:30 p.m. Vera’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at The Parish Community of St. Kevin on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. Rite of Committal to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Northland Pointe Auxiliary. Online condolences available at www.cudneyfuneralhome.com.
