À la mémoire de
Vera Adamec
1 juin 1924 –
6 avril 2022
Vera Adamec was born in Ukraine – Poltava Oblast, in the village of Stassy on the 1st of June 1924. Her parents were Petro & Maria Janko (Olifir)
Vera was a survivor of the Holodomor of 1932-1933
Vera married Wolodymyr Adamec in 1942. Shortly thereafter, they began their escape from Ukraine during the Nazi occupation and moved westwards.
After moving through several European countries, they ended up in Saltzberg, Austria in a displaced labor camp. To survive, they planted and harvested farm fields.
Wolodymyr (husband) worked as a mechanic at a US army base. Unable to get visas to the US or Canada, they did obtain a visa and passage to Brazil in 1948.
Vera and her husband arrived in Sao Paulo as immigrants and once again started to work on farms
Eventually, they settled in Sao Paulo and became business owners. They had a son (Slavko) in 1950.
With the discovery of a relative (Wolodymyr’s younger sister Maria) in August 1962 immigrated to New York U.S.A. Maria (Wolodymyr’s sister) passed away in 1968.
Vera’s family was faced with the possibility of losing their only son, Slavko in the US draft to Vietnam. Once again, a decision to move was made
The family emigrated to Toronto, Canada on August 10, 1968
They integrated into the Toronto Ukrainian community and became active members of the St. Volodymyr Orthodox Cathedral in 1969
Vera was always involved in the Church activities and a member of the UWAC Olha branch.
Vera cared for her ill husband in their home for a year and a half, before he passed away in June 2001. They were married for 59 years.
After 40 plus years of residence in the Forest Hill area, she moved into her Etobicoke condominium in 2006.
Vera loved to socialize with people and stay informed about events and activities involving the Church and the community. She earned the reputation of being the key BBC person to contact to obtain information (Baba to Baba Communication)
Vera loved being surrounded by her family at all times and always focused on their well being, especially great-grandson Christopher
Vera became a resident at The Ukrainian Care Centre in 2021 and was well accepted by residents and staff members with her constant life stories and humorous jokes. Special thanks to Dr. Schul, Svitlana Melnyk, and her PSW Mary Velikanitch, as well as all the other wonderful PSW that cared for her in her final days.
Vera left us on Wednesday, April 6th, 2022. She leaves behind her son, Slavko, her daughter-in-law, Olya, and grandsons Alex (Jaylene), Andrew, and her great-grandson Christopher. She also leaves behind her other honorary son Peter Bayrachny, his wife Larissa, and granddaughter Emily.
