January 2022
Born 95 years ago, Dorothy van Warmerdam (born van Eindhoven), our mom, and Oma passed away on January 8, 2022. We are immensely grateful that all 7 of her kids were able to spend time with her before she passed away peacefully at Oshawa General Hospital. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, Peter van Warmerdam. After 9 years apart, they are finally together again.
They leave behind a legacy of love with their 7 kids (Maryke, Dorothy, Paul, Frank, Michael, Teresa and Elizabeth), their spouses (Steve, Brian, Aldis, Yvonne, Anne, Michael and Mark), their children’s 20 kids (her grandchildren), the grandchildren’s partners and their 10 kids (her 10 great grandchildren). She loved being surrounded by the little ones!
Mom can easily be described as a pillar of strength. She travelled from her home in Holland with her fiance in 1953, to Canada, married in Windsor Ontario in a dress borrowed from her aunt. Together, Dorothy and Peter created a family of 9, moving 27 times, (Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick, plus a one-year stint on the Big Island of Hawaii), finally settling in Ajax Ontario, in a home by the Lake. While raising her family, she often welcomed others, from friends that stayed with us to friends who joined us on camping holidays, to various Dutchies (extended family members). Folks joined us and added to the base of 9 from a week to a season. Mom always made sure there was somewhere to sleep, good food on the table, tea in the pot and love always love!
Once the kids had grown, and the youngest was finally in university, at 60 years old, she joined dad on his overseas construction assignments (living in both Kenya and Tanzania for 2 years each), where she became known as Momma Foundation to the communities where they lived and worked. Some of us were lucky enough to visit them in Africa.
She loved to travel, camping across the US, Canada (including both Alaska and the Yukon), travelling Europe, China, Israel, Australia and New Zealand. She loved to swim, in oceans, lakes, rivers and swimming pools, regardless of the temperature, It’s refreshing! was her common description of ice-cold water). She was still swimming 3 or 4 times weekly in the community pool right up until COVID shut down the pools in 2020.
Donations in memory of Dorothy and the love she shared with this world can be made to one of her three favourite charities; Doctors without Borders, Save the Children or the Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund.
