Obituary of Valerie Michael Salter
Valerie Michael (Gould) Salter
(1945-2022)
Valerie never did anything by halves—she participated fully and completely in life:
graduating in drama from Brock University, raising children and fostering parental participation within Maple Grove, Odyssey House, Lorne Park Elementary, and Tecumseh Public Schools, advocating causes that seek to transform the world to a better place (The Hunger Project, and Landmark Education), promoting Heritage House Tours in Niagara, and creating community wherever she went.
Valerie approached the 4-year confrontation with cancer in her characteristic Viking determination. She was committed to bringing ‘fun, ease, and play’ to every situation, including (in her words) her experience with “this cancer thing…”. She relished philosophical and emotional discussions of ideologies and theologies, separately or together; her mind was boundless, her theme song “What A Wonderful World”. She was light years ahead, all we had to do was try to keep-up. She championed the exploration of differing perspectives and was a life-long student of bearing witness, anchored in her mantra “it’s just what’s so”. Valerie’s culinary passion connected family, friends, and acquaintances with no one left out, and always room at the table for one more.
After a long and emotional goodbye the night before with her children Samantha & Michael (Sarah Concannon), and treasured grandchildren Bella & Norah, Valerie left peacefully from West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, with her husband of 42-years, W.A. Bill Salter, by her side singing her on with “Until It’s Time For You To Go”.
Valerie developed legions of devoted friends and, as extended family, they also mourn her passing. May the circle be unbroken.
