TRUSCOTT, Duncan
—
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Anthony Duncan Truscott, on March 24, 2022, in Kelowna, BC, at the age of 75 years.
He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his daughter Laura and her partner Colin; his daughter Jillian and her partner Javier; grandchildren Ben, Jamie, Logan, and Faye; sister Patricia and her husband Roger; niece Liz, her husband Ross, and their daughters Florence and Phoebe; nephew Duncan, his wife Fatima and their daughter Alba; as well as numerous relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his mother Joy, his father Tony, and his stepmother Wendy.
Duncan was born in Norwich, England and moved to Norwood in London when he was 3. At age 8 his family moved to Petts Wood in Kent. His secondary education was at Cray Valley Technical School where he met his lifelong friend John Bustin. He attended Leicester University where he obtained a 1st class degree in Economics. Whilst at school he was awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Award. He loved sport, especially cricket, and gained University Colours for playing field hockey. He loved watching football, especially his favourite team Tottenham Hotspurs. Egyptology was his great passion and when he could he would spend many hours in the Egyptian section of the British Museum. When he was 20, he took a solo adventure to the US, where he jumped on a greyhound bus and travelled across the country.
He worked in the Civil Service until he emigrated to Canada with long hair and sideburns in 1969. Settling first in Vancouver, BC, he lived with his best mates John, Gerry, and Martyn. He later moved to Toronto, ON, where he joined a cricket team and had a close-knit community of friends, many of whom also came from the UK. It was here that he met Jackie, and their daughters Laura and Jillian were born. They later moved to Calgary, AB in 1997. He worked for more than 30 years in human resources, and got the opportunity to live out his dream working in Cairo, Egypt at the Children’s Cancer Hospital for two years. He spoke so highly of his time in Egypt, and the many friends he made there. We are grateful that many of us had the chance to visit him in Egypt, with Duncan acting as our personal tour guide.
He retired to Kelowna, BC to be closer to friends and escape the Calgary winters. He loved meeting his friends for coffee, visits from his daughters, various volunteer work, and taking pictures of the view from his balcony.
Duncan’s world revolved around his daughters Laura and Jillian, and he was always looking forward to visiting them and their friends in Vancouver and Amsterdam. He was very proud of his grandsons Ben and Jamie, sharing videos and pictures of them all the time. He especially loved it when family and friends pointed out how much both of the boys resemble him. He had a very special bond with his sister Patricia and her family in England. Even though they lived far apart, they shared many fun-filled holidays together over the years.
He was always the life of the party, with his terrible jokes, infectious laugh, and inimitable singing voice. Duncan, who referred to himself as “Mr. Cool”, easily made friends with everyone he met. He was passionate about politics and current events. Taking after his own grandfather, he loved photography, and thanks to this we have countless memories on film. He loved to travel and took many opportunities to visit family and friends around the world.
His friendships he made were lifelong, and the outpouring of support and love we’ve received since his passing is a tribute to his character.
A celebration of Duncan’s life will be held on FRIDAY, APRIL 1, 2022, at 2:00 pm, at THE LINDON HOUSE, 1449 Ethel St, Kelowna, BC.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Duncan’s memory to The Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal or the Children’s Cancer Hospital in Egypt.
