Obituary
Thomas Stewart, in his 83rd year, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept 26, after another great summer of golf with his buddies from Nottawasaga. Tom, once again, earned the rights to his license plate “GLFMYAGE” for the 8th straight year, shooting a 73 earlier this summer, even after two major surgeries in the spring.
Tommy, as he was nicknamed by his family and friends, was the fourth child and oldest boy of 4 brothers (Doug, Mike and John) and 5 sisters (Joan McCarthy, late Carol Stebel, Phyliss Stephens, Dianne Stephens, and Nancy Koehle) born to Graham and Ruthie (nee Ingram) in the south Scarborough area, and was the first Stewart boy to play Jr. A hockey with the Toronto Marlies, and was later drafted by the Detroit Redwings.
Married to his high-school sweetheart, Sharon Beryl (nee Hathway) for almost 50 years, he was never quite the same after she was unexpectedly promoted to Glory almost 10 years ago. Sharon, a spiritual rock for Tom, was the love of his life, and together they grew as Christians and reared their only son, David, in Unionville and later Bolton. Tom was not only David’s honoured father, hero, mentor and role model, but also became his very best friend, as they shared common interests in all aspects of life, vocation, and sport.
Beloved Father-in-law to David’s wife, Andrea, and Grandpa, as he was affectionately known by his two loving granddaughters, Sarah (Noah Murray) and Victoria (Daniel Kooy), was a joyful and comedic part of our frequent family gatherings, and was always present for all of our important moments, including their respective weddings which took place in the last 2 years. Grandpa was also thrilled that his new grandsons-in-law have likewise embraced his love of golf.
An accomplished senior sales executive for over 40 years, Tom was well known and respected throughout the consumer products industry, as he worked with Sanford Faber Castell selling famous stationery products to major retailers and distributors across Canada for over 30 years. Upon full retirement in 2012, he refocused his time on family, friends and his love of golf in the Nottawasaga community of Briar Hill, where he made many cherished friendships in his latter years.
Friend, Uncle, Nephew, Brother, Dad, and Grandpa Tom will be sadly missed by all those who knew him and loved him.
The Funeral Service for Tom will be held at W. J. Thomas Funeral Home in Alliston on Friday, September 30 at 11am, with a reception to follow, and interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto. Visitation will be on Thursday, September 29 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at the W.J. Thomas Funeral Home. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to any of the following charities: Christian School Foundation, The Salvation Army, New City Church Newmarket, or Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston.
