Passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on the summer solstice, (September 22, 2022), at the Welland Hospital at the age of 93. He is predeceased by the love of his life, Ardys (nee Sherk). Tom and Ardys are survived by daughters Candy (Mike Dionne) Bell, Lynda (Scott) Stafford-Veale, and Nancy (David Forgay) Bell and grandchildren Samuel (Hayley) Stafford-Veale, Joseph Stafford-Veale, and Alex Forgay. He is also survived by his sister Reta Hildebrand and sister-in-law Gert Sherk, and predeceased by his brother-in-law George Sherk. He was looking forward to the arrival of a great grandchild in March 2023.
Tom was blessed to be able to join a second family through his later marriage to Cathy Morden. His loss is felt deeply by her children Pat Morden, Lyle (Rachelle) Morden, David (Lori) Morden, grandchildren Angela, Dan, Conor, Richard, Lindsay, Katie, Melissa, Emily and Sara and numerous great grandchildren – all of whom he loved deeply.
Tom lived his entire life in the Niagara Region, spending much of his time in the communities of Dain City, Welland and Port Colborne. An electrician, he was a dedicated employee of Union Carbide, where he worked for most of his career. Tom played at a competitive level for several sports teams in the region, including the Crowland Bisons Hockey Team and championship winning baseball teams. He was a committed coach of the Welland Bantam AAA hockey team, and spent many a day on the course at Riverview Golf Club. For over seventy years, Tom could be found watching or listening to his beloved St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Maple Leafs.
While Tom excelled as an athlete, he is remembered most for the love, care and warmth he showed to his family and all those who knew him. Following the passing of Ardys, he raised his three girls with the committed help of extended family and continued to be an outstanding father. His daughters were always the centre of his world, and he was forever proud of them and their spouses. To his grandchildren, Grandpa Tom passed along his love and passion for sports and showed them how to be kind, caring and loving adults. As a friend, a colleague, or even a passing acquaintance, Tom brought the light of the world to everyone he met. He was one hell of a guy.
The family would like to pass on its sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff at Portal Village, as well as the doctors, nurses and support staff at the Welland Hospital Emergency Department.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place with arrangements entrusted to the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne.
There will be a gathering to celebrate his life announced at a later date.
