Theresa Margaret O’Neill 1926 2022

O’Neill, Theresa Margaret (Carr)
– 96, passed away Thursday, June 16 at the
Seaside Manor in Canso, Nova Scotia. Born in St. Francis Harbour, she
was the daughter of Peter Martin Carr and Sarah Louise (Diggins) Carr.
Theresa is survived by her son, Robert James “Robbie”
(Margot); grandchildren John Thompson (Erin), Margot Elizabeth
& Mary Kathleen; and, their mother Carmelita. She was
predeceased by her daughter Wanda Louise (died 1961, age 13), husband
James Lawrence, twin-brother Francis, brother Robert, and twins
– Alice & Joseph who died in infancy.
Theresa lived much of her married life in Mulgrave, NS until
the untimely death of her husband in 1989. Thereafter, she moved to
Halifax where, for more than 30 years, she enjoyed a robust,
independent life filled with a multitude of friends and extended
family of all stripes and persuasions. With abundant enthusiasm and
curiosity, she partook in all manner of church and social activities,
celebratory occasions with her grandchildren, and was a long-time
member of a bowling league well into hers 80s. She also held her own
against anyone when playing cards.
Although she never learned to drive, she was a welcome
travelling companion on trips that took her from Newfoundland to the
Rocky Mountains and beyond, to the United States, and even to Cuba
with her son’s family.
Theresa enjoyed a great love for theatre and had an extended
family of contacts in the Halifax community, many of whom were actors
and writers she met in Guysborough County when they worked with the
Mulgrave Road Theatre Company, co-founded by her son Robbie in
1977.
The family is especially indebted to Theresa’s
angels of mercy – Elna Siebring and Beverly Grady. Both were dear
friends and special caregivers in her later years. They were sorely
tested when the Covid Pandemic struck in March, 2020. It was a
turbulent time fraught with worry as she had to move abruptly from her
apartment to the Northwood Manor in Halifax where more than sixty
residents died during a four month lockdown.
When restrictions were lifted, she was spirited away and back
to St. Francis Harbour in the care of Beverly and Arnold Grady who
celebrated her safe arrival with, what else, but a feast of lobsters.
Many happy months and festive occasions followed before her final days
at the Seaside Manor.
Special thanks are due to the nurses and staff at the Seaside
and Northwood Manors, Guysborough Memorial Hospital,
Mulgrave’s CWL (Theresa was a proud member for 55 years),
and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs Independence
Program. Thanks also to the many family members and friends who
enriched her life and the many who travelled from far and wide to
visit her in the final months of intensive care.
Visitation will be held in Mulgrave and Area Resting
Place From 12 –
2pm on Friday, July
8th where the Funeral service
will follow at 2pm at the St. Lawrence
Roman Catholic Church, Mulgrave followed by interment in the parish
cemetery, with Father Allan MacPhie officiating. Memorial
donations to the Mulgrave or St. Francis Harbour Cemetery funds would
be much appreciated.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis
Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort
may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
