TERRY CYR (Chief Warrant Officer, Canadian Forces, retired), age 73, passed away peacefully at home on March 27th, after being diagnosed in early December with a rare form of rapidly progressing dementia.
Known by many as a protector, Terry had a passion for life and sharing time with family and friends. He was so very proud of his grandchildren and took every opportunity to brag about their accomplishments.
Raised in Glace Bay, he was the son of Albert and Dorothy.
He is survived by Gayle (his “old boot”), loving wife of 52 years; Son Michael (Robin); Daughter Lisa (Ray); Grandchildren Chelsea, Megan, Grayden, Tessa; Siblings Al/Sonny* (June*), Donnie* (Joan), Lillian* (Charlie*), Diane (Danny*), Gerald (Resa), Linda (Bob*), Fred (Ann), Edward (Annie); Several nieces and nephews. *Predeceased
Terry served 31 years as a Military Policeman, living coast to coast and in between. Postings included Montreal, Gagetown, Holberg, Shearwater, Toronto, Petawawa, Ottawa (NDHQ), and Cold Lake; served 2 UN Tours – SDA Israel (Golan Heights) and SDA Cyprus; was the security officer for Canada Remembers Ceremonial Contingent (traveled the world for 2 years), and the Burma Recovery Mission. His military file contained numerous ‘atta boys’ that reflect who he was at his core. He was a firm yet fair disciplinarian; Highly thought of for his inexhaustible dedication to supporting the service and the community; Never hesitated to give freely of his own time to assist others.
Although he couldn’t tell a weed from a flower, he spent the next 14 years as the owner/operator of Terry Cyr, Property Maintenance, a successful landscaping business in Ottawa.
When Terry made the decision to retire completely, he and Gayle packed up and moved back to the Maritimes to be closer to his siblings. Retirement afforded them the freedom to travel extensively, spend more quality time with family and friends, and pursue their love of golf. Every day was Saturday.
Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Terry’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
