Obituary of TARAS SOKOLYK
Taras Sokolyk passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at the age of 69 after battling cancer for years with courage and determination. He will be missed by his wife Janice, son Michael (Todd), sister Geraldine Fallis (Bob), and extended family with whom he shares a special bond. Taras was predeceased by his father Michael, and his mother Anne.
Taras always referred to Dominion City as “home”. While he lived there, he was a town fixture greeting customers from behind his grocery stores’ deli counters. He often reminisced about winning baseball tournaments with the Dominion City Flyers, and cherished the relationships with friends and neighbours he grew up with.
Taras’s professional accomplishments were plentiful and diverse, and he continued to enjoy his work until weeks before he passed away. He was known for his ability to foster collaboration and accountability. While work was always a source of inspiration for Taras, he could always make time to talk politics and enjoyed cheering for his beloved St. Louis Cardinals every summer.
Taras’ family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Paul and Meghan, RN from Cancer Care Manitoba and the entire team at the Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care Program for their expertise and compassion.
A Funeral Service will be held at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church 250 Jefferson Avenue, Winnipeg on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Taras’ family have requested that those attending the funeral ensure to meticulously adhere to all public health recommendations when deciding to attend, that they are not symptomatic, are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and wear a mask for the entirety of the service.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Roseau Crossing Heritage Park.

Our condolences to Janice & son. Sokolyk’s Store was my main grocery store when we liveed there 1983-1989. The Sokolyk’s were our neighbors & our kids probably walked across their lawn to get to the school.
My condolences to the family. I have many fond memories of Taras as we grew up in DC. He did so much for the community. He will be missed.
Deepest sympathy to the entire Sokolyk family. Taras was a wealth of knowledge and had such astute expertise/ wisdom, providing input on many projects over the years. As Mayor of Emerson when you went to him for advice he not only provided the best answer, but mostly the right one! He will be truly missed.
So sad to read of Taras’s passing. I worked alongside Taras in trying to convert the old Metropolitan Theatre into a Manitoba music museum. It never came to fruition but he was always fun to be with and had a quick wit and a sharp mind. I knew him from years earlier from St. Johns-Ravenscourt where I taught he and Janice’s son Michael. Michael starred in my Rock Show productions with his amazing voice. Taras and Janice were so proud of Michael. When I wrote a feature story on Dominion City’s most famous resident, Buddy Knox, a few years back, Taras shared some wonderful personal memories of Buddy. Taras loved Dominion City. My sincere condolences to Janice and Michael. We’ve lost a good man.
So,so many memories from our younger years in Dominion City. Whether it was getting “ Ponderosa” sweatshirts printed or getting authentic “Lee” jeans in to the store for us crazed teenagers, Taras was always working hard to please. He always remained tethered to the community much to the betterment of this town.
Janice, Michael and extended family , you have my sincerest sympathy in this great loss.
Sincerely,
Maxine French
