On December 20 th , 2022, Tak Ching Lee (李黃德貞) passed away peacefully in her Markham home at the age of 96 with her son, Trevor, daughters Janet and Christine, granddaughters
Justina, Adriana, and grandson Joseph by her side.
Tak Ching was born in Guangdong, China and has two younger brothers in Hong
Kong. Known to family as mom, Ja-po, and Ja-po tai, she was a loving wife, mother,
grand-mother and great grandmother. She had five children – Janet (Matthew Lyn),
Eva (John Ripley), Maria, Trevor and Christine (Donovan Chong); four grandchildren –
Joseph (Michelle Chin), Justina (Damian Chung), Felicia, and Adriana; and six great
grandchildren— Jasmine, Alexandra, Jade, Ryan, Brandon, and Tyler. Her
grandchildren and great grandchildren were here world, endless smiles and laughter.
They will all miss her dearly.
She lived a long, fulfilling life. She was married March 5,1944 in Guangdong at age 20
to Chow Hung Lee. In 1952 Chow Hung, Tak Ching and daughter Janet emigrated from
Guangdong, China to Hong Kong. The other four children were born in Hong Kong.
At the age of 34, she emigrated to Jamaica in 1961 with Eva, Trevor and Christine to
join her husband who had emigrated in 1960 to help his parents in the family business.
Alongside her husband, she ran a popular Chinese bakery at Premiere Plaza in
Kingston, which was known for her “sow bows”. Her eldest daughter, Janet and third
daughter, Maria joined the family in 1966.
After 12 years in Jamaica, the family emigrated to Toronto, Canada July 1, 1973. In
Toronto, she focused on raising her children and grand children and helped with the
family business in Toronto – Hong Kong House and Tavern. Outside of family and
work, she was an avid gardener, growing endless vegetables that she added to her
most missed Hakka dishes. She also enjoyed playing cards every week with her friends
at the Tsung Tsing Association.
Visitation and service will be held on Wednesday, December 28 between 10:30am –
12:30pm. The burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery at 1:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Daily Bread Food Bank on her behalf,
as Tak Ching loved cooking and feeding her family and made sure they never went hungry.
