Sylvia Lukey 2022

Obituary
Sylvia Lukey passed away following a massive stroke, at the age of 81, in the Regina General Hospital, on January 3, 2022.
Sylvia was born on March 30, 1940, to Joseph and Natlia (Parasiuk) Bebenek and grew up in the Grand Ravine District north/west of Norquay, SK, along with her seven siblings: Mike, Anne, John, Paul, Stanley, Mary, and David.
She attended the Grand Ravine school for grades 1 to 8 and then moved to the dorm in Sturgis for grades 9 and 10.
After leaving school, she worked as a waitress at Gurski’s Café in Norquay, SK. It was at this time that she met her beloved husband, Paul (Purnell) Lukey. They were married on July 11, 1959, at the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church in Hyas, SK. They were blessed with three children, Steve, Robert, and Sonia.
Sylvia persevered through the toil of raising a family with no running water and a wood stove for heat and cooking. She grew a huge garden and did a lot of canning. She also milked cows, made cottage cheese, and sold cream to help supplement their income.
They lived in Arabella until 1971, and then moved to the Melmore District on the Derkatch homestead until Purnell’s passing on January 15, 1984. Sylvia then moved to Norquay and lived with Sonia and Conard.
Sylvia started driving a school bus in 1976 and retired 30 years later in 2006; she enjoyed her time driving bus and the students she watched grow up and move on.
She enjoyed putting jigsaw puzzles together and going for coffee. She especially enjoyed music and loved going to the coffee house in Pelly when it was able to be open.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Sylvia was predeceased by her loving husband, Purnell; parents, Natila and Joseph; brothers, Mike, John (June), Paul, and Stanley; and sisters, Anne (Mike) Sobothniski, and Mary (Walter) Perepeluk.
Sylvia is survived by her children: Steve of Portage La Prairie, MB, Robert (Kathy) of Pelly, SK, and Sonia (Conard) Frampton of Norquay, SK; her brother, David (Pauline) Bebenek of Norquay, SK; sisters-in-law, Lupe of El Paso, TX and Helen of Kamsack, SK; grandchildren: Nicole (Terry), Tyler (Paige), Jason (Christine), Sydnium (Jennifer), Shane (Jenn), Keith (Christine), Kimberley (Mark), Paige (Matthew), Gerald (Orla), Jeremy (Erin), Ryan (Chalan), Dane (Nicole), and Kayla (Josh); forty great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A Public Visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m., Friday, January 7, 2022, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK. A Public Memorial Service will be held at the Pelly Community Hall, Pelly, SK, with Velda Dahlin officiating. A Private Interment will precede the service at Maloneck Cemetery, north of Pelly, SK.
