Stewart McIntyre September 6 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of Stewart Alexander McIntyre announce his passing on September 4, 2022 in his 94th year at Babcock Community Care Centre. Stewart was born in Appin on October 4, 1928 to Elmer and Edna McIntyre. He is survived by his two daughters Sue Schnurr (Charlie)and Debi Wilson (Nigel) and his grandchildren Katy (Francois) Schnurr, Matt Schnurr (Carrie), Ryan (Kevin) Wilson, Brett (Emma) Wilson and Kelly (Dan) Moniz. He was loved by his Great Grandchildren Avery, Caden and Kayla Moniz, Brynn, Dylan and Jordyn Wilson and Émilie, Alexandre and Sébastien Cartier. He is also survived by his sister Ruth Marshman and nieces Patti Marshman- Goldblatt (Ron) and Julie MacCuish (George). He was predeceased by his son Dan McIntyre (1995), brother-in-law Max Marshman (2020) and wife Bernice (2020).
When our Dad was 8 months old his father was killed in a car-train crash at North Appin station. Following Elmer’s death Edna over the care of his Appin General Store and remarried (G.W. McMaster) a few years later. At that time, his beloved Uncle Dan and Aunt Mattie McIntyre took over his care. It was through his uncle that Dad learned and developed a love for the cattle business. He assumed the running of the McIntyre Sales Yard following his Uncle’s untimely death in 1950.
Following in the McIntyre tradition, Dad also played baseball for the Appin team and later became the manager, bringing his wife and children with him to every game.
Our Dad always told us the story about the first time he ever saw our Mom at a dance. Dad told his friend ‘he was going to marry her one day‘ and he did just that on May 12, 1951. They had a traditional marriage of the 50s with Mom at home with the children and Dad at work buying cattle. Even though Dad worked long hours there was hardly a night he didn’t come home to have dinner with his family or drive the kids to school on rainy or wintery days. In later years our Dad became involved in the standardbred horse racing business. Our family spent holiday time together at Lake Couchiching, a trip to Washington DC, Detroit, Expo 67 and Florida.
Mom and Dad lived together in the house they had built before their wedding for over 60 years until Dad was no longer able to care for his ailing wife. Dad provided personal care and prepared meals as Mom’s dementia worsened. He lived in their home for many years after Mom moved to Babcock when his failing health led to hospitalization and subsequently a move to Babcock.
Besides his family, Dad loved the cattle business (working until a few weeks before his death) and Appin (living there his entire life).
The McIntyre family greatly appreciates the kindness and loving care given to both our parents during their stays at Babcock Community Care Centre and we marvelled that our Dad actually became a ‘Bingo King’. A celebration of life for Stewart and Bernice will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Babcock Resident’s Council or charity of your choice.
We will miss you Dad!
