Stella Pierce (Denton)
1924-2022
It is with sadness that the family of Stella Pierce say goodbye to a
very adventurous, loving, and kind mother, grandmother and great
grandmother. Stella passed away peacefully at Hillside Pines Home for
Special Care , Bridgewater on August 28, 2022. The years between
April 25, 1924 and 2022 were filled with many good memories.
Stella was born in Twickenham , England, served in WWII with the
WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force) in the Met. Office, met and
married Tony Pierce (RCAF) on July 29th 1944 and came to Canada via
Pier 21 in December 1944.
Mum and Dad lived in many Canadian National Parks. Stella met every
challenge of living in the parks wholeheartedly including learning to
cross-country ski, horseback ride, and contending with bears at the
back door! She was involved with the Scouting /Guiding movement, the
Anglican Church and ACW.
Stella loved theatre and starred in The Jasper Story as Mary Schaffer
, Blythe Spirit as Madame Arcati in Waterton Lakes National Park, and
productions at the Pond Theatre in Halifax.
Mum and Dad retired to Halifax in 1981 where they attended St.
Paul’s Anglican Church. In 1982 they served with Canadian
Executive Services Overseas in Saba, Malaysia over two years
helping establish the National Park naturalist program.
Stella supported Neptune Theatre, Halifax Symphony Orchestra, Women
for Music and was a VON visitor for many years. She was a member of
the War Brides travelling from NS to Ottawa for Remembrance Day
ceremonies 2013 and enjoying the special tea for Veterans and War
Brides at Pier 21 with Prince Charles in 2014.
All her life she was creative and loved embroidery especially. She was
an avid reader and in later life, a world traveller, visiting every
continent except Antarctica. Her love for the fibre arts was passed
on to her daughters and granddaughters and love of gardening, culture,
music , storytelling , and adventure to all her children.
Her quiet faith in God held her in good stead throughout the many joys
and sorrows of her life . “Now these three things remain: faith,
hope and love. But the greatest of these is Love.” I
Corinthians 13:13.
She was predeceased by her husband, Tony and son, Robin Geoffrey;
parents, Thomas and Elsie Denton and brother, Geoffrey Denton.
Together Stella and Tony raised five children -Tom (Samia) Pierce,
Penny(Graham) Pratt, Valerie(Martin)Ward, Robin Pierce, deceased, and
Jonathan(Barbara) Pierce. She greatly loved Heather, Alistair, Emma,
Leigh, Simon, Jennifer, Rose, Andrew, Jillian & Emily, her
grandchildren, as well as her 13 great grandchildren.
