Stefan Voros, age 92, of Stratford passed away peacefully at the Mitchell Nursing Home on Tuesday, May 10, 2022. Cremation has taken place. He is reunited with his late wife Ludmila Voros who predeceased him on October 19, 2012.
Loving father of Stefan Voros Jr. (Wendy), Mary Allman (Dave) and Joseph Voros (Renita). Cherished grandfather of Joshua, Rachel, Zachary Voros, Aaron and Christine Allman, Dominic, Basil, Vincent, Sebastian, Danica and Jerome Voros
Born in Borejci, Slovenia, son of the late Franc and Ana Voros, Stefan came to Canada with his wife Ludmila in 1957 and lived in Stratford all their lives. After retirement, they enjoyed many wonderful years at their cottage in Point Clark. Stefan was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. He was also an active member of the Stratford Knights of Columbus for many years. Stefan was a shop foreman at the original Perth Metal Industries factory site starting in the 1960s which later expanded to become what is now Stackpole Industries. As a young man in his twenties during the Cold War, military conscription from 1951-1955 in the Eastern bloc while trapped behind the Iron Curtain influenced his decision to escape to freedom in the West. As a Catholic and a pacifist, living in the West was a dream that was later realized by arriving in Stratford. After first escaping to the West into Austria, Stefan and Ludmila were married in Radkersbourg, Austria in 1956 while waiting to be accepted as Canadian refugees. Sailing on the ocean liner The Neptunia in 1957, Stefan and Ludmila became landed immigrants in Canada. While living in Stratford, they became proud Canadian Citizens in 1966.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Monday, May 30 at 11 a.m. Rev. Fr. David Butler Celebrant. Interment will follow in Avondale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and as expressions of sympathy memorial donations may be made to the Stratford General Hospital through the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford.
