Obituary
Stanley (Stan/Papa) Samuel Sopow born August 2, 1954, in Vancouver, BC, passed away on the evening of June 1, 2022, at his home in Gibsons, BC, surrounded by his family. He said fuck you to cancer and passed away on his terms, which included being at home with his loved ones, sharing drinks with family & friends, and doing a shot of rye with his doctor, Dr. Yao. Stan was predeceased by his parents, Peter & Gladys, and his brother Peter. Stan is survived by his wife Karen; their children, Michael (Amber) and Corinne (Adrian) Oreamuno; their grandchildren, Kayden & Rylan Oreamuno and Parker & Adalyn; his siblings: Lil, Jim (Myra), Elly (Mark), Benny, and Gord; his nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved dog, Bella, and grandfur-babies.
Stan grew up in the small towns of Blue River, Merritt, Ganges, and Gibsons where he loved to push the limits. From the tales of Stan lighting the streets on fire, egging police officers, ripping sinks off the precinct walls, to the many “full moon” sightings. The echoes of these adventures live on in the stories of Stan.
Stan was a volunteer firefighter, long-hauler, and machine/crane operator at Gary Mundell’s, Fiedler’s, and Pulp Mill. Where stories of Stan still live on.
He always had his own way of doing things, from the way he spoke Sopownese (as we called it), to his coaching/teaching style. He had a gruff exterior that never fooled anyone, he was one of the most caring and loving people you could ever meet, a big teddy bear.
In April 1972, Stan fell in love with his partner, Karen, and six years later they were married on August 19, 1978. 50yrs together. Endless amount of memories, from traveling to different parts of the world, being in their home on wheels, countless camping trips, watching each one of their children find their own love stories, to their four adorable grandchildren.
Stan’s love and joy for life were best expressed in his interactions with his grandchildren. He shared so many memories and life lessons with them, from camping adventures, beluga sightings, fishing experiences, ghost stories, impressive dance moves, sports outings, to his love of woodwork & gardening. His legacy will live on through them and his children.
As we have shared a few memories with you, we know there are many more out there and we welcome you to share them with us at Stan’s celebration of life on June 18, 2022 from 2-5pm at the Gibsons Legion Hall.
