Sonya’s Obituary
With great sadness, the family of the late Sonya Bartko, beloved wife of Bill Bartko, announce her passing at the Canora Gateway Lodge on Saturday, March 12, 2022, at the age of 74 years.
Sonya Virginnia was born on April 16, 1947, in Canora, SK, to George and Mary (nee Wihnan) Leson. She attended school and graduated in Canora, SK, and then went on to further her education at the Regina Alliance School of Commerce, Regina, SK.
On August 4, 1967, Sonya married Bill Bartko and they were blessed with three children.
A dedicated wife and mother, Sonya also worked outside the home as a SaskTel Operator and as a bookkeeper at the Esso gas station and Active Accounting. For most of her working career, Sonya was employed as reception staff and lunch coordinator at Leson’s Funeral Home. Active in her community, Sonya was an active member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity in Canora, SK, where she taught Sunday School and held the positions of President and Treasurer of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada – Maria Markova Branch. Sonya was also very involved in Ukrainian Dance and was a CYMK supervisor. In her spare time, she enjoyed camping at Good Spirit Lake, especially Canora Beach and George’s Beach, and enjoyed several vacations and trips over the years to Alberta, British Columbia, New York, and a VIA Rail train ride to Prince Rupert. Above all, Sonya loved Sunday drives with Bill and spending time with her family and friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Sonya was predeceased by her parents, George and Mary Leson; her son, Robert Marvin Bartko; and her brothers, Norman, in infancy, Henry (Hazel) Leson, and David Leson.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Bartko; daughters, Lisa (Dan) Sakal and Chelsea (Adrien) Rock; her treasured grandchildren: Bill and Abbey Sakal and Matthew and Joshua Rock; brother, Edward (Patricia) Leson; and her sister-in-law, Olga Leson; as well as her extended family and many friends.
A Public Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, March 17, 2022, and the Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 18, 2022, both from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Rev. Fr. Petro Tsenov officiating. Interment will follow in the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Sonya Bartko.
