Passed away at Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown, Ontario on August 1, 2022, at the age of 99 and in her 78th, year as a School Sister of Notre Dame. Predeceased by her parents Vincent and Anna (Bittner) Merkowsky, her brothers, Lawrence, Leonard, and sisters, Marie Loerzel, Sister Francene Merkowsky O.L.V.M, and half-sister, Antonia Trodd Fondly remembered by the members of her community, her sister, Hedwig Wurzer, half-sisters, Gloria Maguire and Diane Loewan and half-brother, Allan and relatives. Sister Zita began her teaching career at Sacred Heart School, Kitchener and then Immaculate Conception School, Formosa. In 1953, she returned to her home province Saskatchewan, where she taught in schools in Handel, Leipzig, and Wilkie. From 1972 – 1974 she taught at Sacred Heart School, Ladner, British Columbia. After 30 years as an elementary school teacher, Sister Zita continued using her teaching skills offering catechetical classes in Kitchener and later in Cloverdale, British Columbia. In Wilkie and Unity, Saskatchewan, she lead bible study groups and visited the elderly and those in nursing homes. Beginning in 1987 Sister Zita was involved in the catechetical correspondence program in the Hamilton diocese until 2009. Sister Zita was looking forward to her 100th birthday in December. Although she had health issues, her mind was very sharp. She was an avid reader and was interested in world events. Due to COVID-19 protocol, there will be no visitation, nor visitors for the Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, August 5, at 10:30 am. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Burlington.
