Indeed, the Lord is near.”
Philippians 4:4-5
Sister Sheila Anne Spooner (Sister M. Lucinda) transitioned home to God on December 13th, 2022, at
St. Joseph’s Motherhouse, North Bay, Ontario.
Sister Sheila Anne was born in Timmins, Ontario; the youngest child of Wilfred Spooner and Gertrude (Belle) Rivers. She is pre-deceased by brother, Gerald (Joan). She is survived by her sister-in-law, Joan, nephews, Chris and Jeff Spooner and niece, Jean Potvin, and cousins.
Sister Sheila Anne graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing Timmins in 1959. Following graduation she enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Nursing Program at the University of Western Ontario, London and became an operating room supervisor at the Victoria Hospital. She then accepted a position as Director of Nursing at the Porcupine General Hospital and shortly thereafter realized that nursing administration was not her forte and she accepted a position at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Hamilton in 1963 as Associate Director of Nursing Education responsible for curriculum. It was here she became active in parish activities and in the RNAO (Registered Nurses Association of Ontario).
Prior to entering the Congregation, Sister Sheila Anne served as a platoon commander for The HMCS Prevost Wrens Division, Reserve Unit, London, Ontario.
Sheila Anne decided to return to Northern Ontario and entered The Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie from her home parish, Church of the Nativity, Timmins, Ontario, on October 15, 1964.
During her community formation years, she was assigned to teach nursing students on the surgical floor at St. Joseph’s Hospital, North Bay. She became the Director of the School of Nursing from 1968 – 1973. In 1973, Schools of Nursing in Ontario were transferred to community colleges. S. Sheila Anne continued to serve as chair of the nursing program at Canadore College. She then pursued studies in the Masters of Health Sciences Administration Program at the University of Alberta. In 1978 she became the Director of Nursing Services at St. Joseph’s Hospital until 1982.
In 1982, she studied Information Systems Management at the University of Toronto and assumed the role of Information Systems Management for the congregation assisting us to move forward with the challenges of the new computer age.
For many years, Sister Sheila Anne was an active member of the Canadian Ski Patrol Algonquin Zone and proudly accepted a life membership award April 19, 1997 acknowledging her contribution in creating, developing and maintaining the standards of the Algonquin Zone.
Many Sisters of St. Joseph throughout Canada were grateful for Sheila-Anne’s services as On-Site Guide in 2003, 2005 or 2007 during Pilgrimages to France to our CSJ roots.
Sheila Anne retired from ministry in 2014 and moved to the Motherhouse.
The body of Sister Sheila Anne will be welcomed home to St Joseph’s Motherhouse, Sacred Heart Chapel, at 2:00 p.m., on Sunday, December 18, 2022. Prayers and wake service will be offered at 4 pm.
