Obituary of Mrs. Shirley Bill
Bill, Shirley Eileen (nee Hammond) – Peacefully at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at the age of 87. Beloved wife of the late James. Dear mother of Donna, Diane, James, Kenneth, Sandra and Brian. Loving grandma to Andrew, Christopher, Sean, Travis, John and Melissa. Dear sister of Lynda.
Shirley was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
Born in Toronto on May 5, 1934, she married her beloved Jimmy (1933-2001) in 1956. They met at St. Anne’s Church on Gladstone Avenue where both were members of the Anglican Young People’s Association. With their friends, they enjoyed dances, tennis and amateur theatre.
They settled in Scarborough in 1960 where they raised their six children. Their home for the past 62 years became the centre of family get-togethers, especially Christmas dinners for the whole extended family. Regular Friday night family dinners were usually followed by game night.
The family enjoyed camping and family trips. Later, Jimmy and Shirley enjoyed the peacefulness of Koshlong Lake in Haliburton.
Shirley was a stay-at-home mom who enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing. She sewed clothes for her children, wardrobes for her daughters’ Barbie dolls and all the bridesmaid dresses for her sister’s wedding. Shirley volunteered with the CGIT which the girls participated in.
Later, when working at Alcohol and Drug Concerns, she made life-long friends. She enjoyed bowling and lunches with her dear friends. She never missed figure skating competitions and the Toronto Blue Jays on television.
Her family had the joy of seeing her live to almost 88 years and wished for more. She was always strong and brave in her fight against a chronic lung condition and was a source of great inspiration to her family. Thank you to the 4B Sunnybrook team who kept her comfortable in her last hours.
We will all miss her love and devotion to her family. Love you. Rest in peace until we meet again.
Family will receive friends at the Ogden Funeral Home, 4164 Sheppard Ave., E. Scarborough (East of Kennedy Rd.) on Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations in Shirley’s memory to the Sunnybrook Foundation or the Canadian Lung Association would be greatly appreciated.
