Shirley Dubinsky, a long-time resident of Sydney, passed away peacefully at age 95 in the Cove Guest Home, Sydney.
She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who also made many community contributions.
A daughter of the late I.B. and Eva (Gaum) Perlin, she attended local schools and MacDonald College.
She was very active in the Jewish community, as a member and soloist of the Temple Sons of Israel synagogue choir and as a president of its Sisterhood. In later years, she and her husband, Harry taught Hebrew school and prepared children for their confirmation when the synagogue was without a Rabbi. She was very involved in Canadian Hadassah Wizo and served as a National Vice-President in the mid 1980’s.
Her love of singing and theater extended to the larger Cape Breton community especially during the 1960’s and 70’s when she appeared in two Y’s Guy Revues and in several Rotary musicals. The highpoint was the role of Gladys in The Pajama Game in 1965.
During the 60’s and 70’s, she also was a freelance journalist for CBC Radio doing opinion pieces, biographical profiles, and covering special events. In later years, she was a docent at the Cape Breton University Art Gallery.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Harry; two brothers, Dr. Irving (Freda) and Dr. Arthur; and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Newman and Esther Dubinsky and Sam and Fanny Dubinsky.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Ruth Perlin; sons, Lon (Brigitte) and Phillip (Dianne); grandsons, Ira (Jess) and Evan; two great-grandchildren, Eli and Noa; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Cove staff for their compassion, kindness, and excellent care.
A graveside service will be held at the Hebrew Cemetery, Lingan Road on Sunday, February 27, 2022, at 11:00 a.m.
