It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing
of Shirley (Montague) Farrell of Antigonish at the age 59 on February
17, 2022, at the Halifax Infirmary, Halifax N.S.
Born in Antigonish, she was the eldest daughter of Mildred
MacLeod. Shirley graduated with a diploma in nursing from St
Martha’s School of Nursing in 1985 and enjoyed a long career
at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital. Her dedication
to her profession and strong belief in the justice for her colleagues
lead her to partake in many positions within the Nova Scotia Nurses
Union, where she served in the positions of shop steward and local
president. Her career in nursing and within the NSNU brought her great
joy; she formed many friendships, loved representing her members, and
held a great passion for her various positions. She will be remembered
for her fairness, justice, and ethics.
Shirley will also be remembered by many for her steadfast
dedication to her family, her selflessness, and her
generosity. For many years she dedicated her time to
supporting her children in their schooling, hockey, and soccer
endeavours, and did it all again with her grandchildren. Her
grandchildren were her greatest love and brought her so much joy. She
enjoyed sleepovers and Facetiming and valued each of their moments
together. Shirley was a social butterfly, always enjoying
spending time with friends and family, and thoroughly enjoyed hosting
people in her home or at her pool. For many years, she
welcomed her children’s friends daily, feeding them,
offering them a place to hangout, or a shoulder to lean
on.
She is survived by her husband Paul, Antigonish; children
Holly (Adam), Antigonish; Keegan (Danielle), Antigonish; Kelsey
(Brett) Plouffe, London ON, and Morgan, Stewiacke;
grandchildren; Jaime, Maggie, Wesley, and Hadley. Her mother Mildred
MacLeod, Antigonish; mother-in-law, Geri Farrell; sisters, Charlene
Montague-McKenna (Charles), and Carolyn (Glen) VanVondren, Antigonish;
numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews and of course her beloved
Golden Retriever, Bailey.
She was predeceased by her brother Jamie Montague, maternal
grandmother Carrie Tovey, father-in-law Patrick Farrell and
granddaughter Faith Farrell.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 21 at CL Curry
Funeral Home, Antigonish from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral Mass will be
held Tuesday, February 23 at St Ninian Cathedral at 11am. Social
distancing protocols will be followed, masks and proof of vaccination
are mandatory.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the
staff of St Martha’s Hospital ICU Team as well as the
Halifax Infirmary’s ICU Team for their compassion, love and
care.
In Memoriam, donations can be made to St. Martha’s
Regional Hospital Foundation (ICU)
