Shirley Ann Perry (Parke)
Shirley was born in Nepean on April 22, 1941 to Wilkin and Ottillie Parke. An apartment on Melrose Avenue was where she spent her early years, then her Dad rented a farm on Greenbank Road next door to Pinecrest Cemetery. Here she developed her love of the farm and was a member of the Carleton 4H Club where she had a champion dairy heifer.
In 1959 her parents decided to move their family to Kemptville. Living on the River Road Shirley caught the eye of a young cattle dealer, Bob Perry, it was love at first sight. They married in October 1962, living on the Goldberg farm and starting a family, she was the loving mother of three boys, Neil, Jim and Steven. They bought the Ross farm on the River Road which is now Equinelle. Shirley was one of the early members of the first Hospital Auxillary and later, living on River Road she became the President of the Auxillary. The hospital was a large part of her life. Working at Hey Day was an annual June event. She played ladies softball and belonged to the lady’s golf club.
With many health issues (rheumatoid arthritis) she remained true to her song “Stand by your man”, Shirley lost Bob to COPD on May 28, 2015. After a year of trying to stay in her own home she was forced to move to a long-term care home where she became dependant on a wheelchair. Always positive and forever optimistic, she never complained. She enjoyed all the musical entertainment and all the social events.
Due to COVID, without family contact, her health declined significantly, window visits and sing-a-longs helped keep her spirits up, after the first lock down once again we were able to sit by her and sing. Her sister would sometimes bring in her guitar and Shirley would draw quite the crowd with her beautiful voice. Shortly after the last lockdown she was struck by a stroke but still was singing to her last breath. Shirley lived by the saying “You have to accent the positive and eliminate the negative, latch on to the affirmative and don’t mess with Mr. inbetween”. And this too will pass! Shirley we will miss your beautiful smile, but we’ll always hold you close in our hearts!
A Graveside service at Kemptville Union Cemetery will be announced in late Spring.
